Mitutoyo Digital Calipers - NIST Certificates?

So I finally bought a Mitutoyo digital caliper.

While I really don't need anywhere near the precision of going down to ten-thousandths of an inch, I like having better quality tools whenever I can.


That said, I was looking at the Mitutoyo 500-197-30 and noticed that there was a version (500-197-30CAL) that includes a certificate for an extra $120 more. Of course, picked the lower cost one.

Now when my order came in, a NIST traceability certificate that's specific my calipers serial number was included. I called the company and they can't really say for sure if they sent me the wrong one. Even if there was an error, just let it be since I've already opened and used it.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has bought a Mitutoyo caliper recently and if those serial number specific NIST certificates are standard or I di I actually get one of the higher priced option? Who cares about these certificates anyway?

I haven't bought a new one lately so I can't comment on whether or not the nist certificate is standard, but for a caliper I wouldn't be bothered with the certificate anyhow. Calipers are what I consider a mid accuracy tool. Good to a couple thou, beyond that you need something more accurate like a micrometer.

Mitutoyo are the best digital calipers on the market, if there is one brand I'd trust for repeatability, they're the ones. You should be able to close them and have them zero out everytime.

BTW smart move getting the 8". I have a 6" and it's just a bit small for my liking. My next one I purchase will be an 8" coolant proof.

We have a 40" digital caliper at work. That thing can be a real pain in the *** to man handle accurately by yourself.

My understanding is the certificate you got just means that caliper is in their database (ready to be calibrated/cert and documentation added to their database) Where as the other one would provide you a certificate that verifies the calibration (and also places the appropriate documentation in their database)

I ordered the same ones from McMaster thru work 6 months ago. It also came with that certificate.

Mine came with the same inspection and cal papers. I don't need nist cal for a caliper. I checked mine with standards and gauge blocks. Never off at any dimension I checked. Always right on the money out to 6". It's just a very well made measuring instrument. Same with My Mitutoyo mics and dial indicators. It's a pure joy to use one of these instruments.
