I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on one of these fluid evacuators, and the MityVac 7400 seems like the best cheap one. $54 at Amazon, $50 at Tooltopia (but free shipping doesn't kick in until $99, $8 solo). Anybody know of a better unit, price, something bad, etc etc?

I have had one for years. I bought it to change the oil in my Mercedes diesels. I have found all kinds of other other uses like backed up sinks, etc. This is a very useful tool. I love mine and have never had a problem with it. Go for it you will not regret it.
Regards

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that as almost everyone in my Mercedes club uses one and have not had any problems. Sounds like yours is not making a seal(?) inside. I think mine came with a lifetime warranty for defects. You should return it.

Ive got one, I use at least once a month, but I don't remember who made mine, its a ball design, not a cylindrical vessel (seem to think it was made in Australia). I have found more uses for it then I thought I would. I have a boat with a 5.7L I/O, I bought it initially to change the oil in that. Great for sucking the fluid out of things your taking apart that don't have a traditional drain point, or at least minimize the mess, like a power steering pump. I changed the oil in my forklift the other day, instead of jacking it up, is another example.

I have the 7201 model - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SR7TC/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I think the main difference is that this model can evacuate as well as dispense.

That said...I am overall unimpressed with mine. But will be keeping it because it does have its purpose - just not as awesome as i thought it would be. Here is my experience

1. Evacuation/dispensing is VERY slow: Took about 10 minutes for me to drain 1 qt out of my rear differential. Although i did have to use the narrower tube in the set.
2. Not 'great' quality: My first one had a small leak around the seal..causing me to constantly have to re-pump to build up the vacuum. I have since received a free replacement from Amazon - but have yet to used/test it. Assuming its good...
3. Very hard to clean the inside. I usually just dump some concentrated Simple Green into the drum and let it sit and pour it out. Can never get it all out. Getting all of the old fluid out of the hose is a chore as well. But figured out a trick by hanging it upside down along my tool box and into a bucket for a couple of hours.
4. Hoses are extremely stiff, making it a tad difficult for storing purposes. But they obviously need to be stiff to fit down dipsticks without getting jammed. This is more of an observation i guess.

Also, FYI - I purchased my 7201 for $72 shipped from amazon a couple of months ago...I noticed that it jumped up to $86 now (typical Amazon, right?). So I'm not sure what the low price point for your 7400 model is.

Hope that helps...

This is typical amazon, now its $67

I also have this one, I use it every day and the only complaint I really have is the drain plug on the top is nearly impossible to remove. Ive lubed it, grinded it down and it still gets stuck in it. Luckily I can just flip a switch and give it a few pumps and all is good.

Yes it ***** diff fluid slow, but something like coolant on the other hand is probably 2 gallons in less than a minute easily.

I dont clean the inside of it, I use it to pull fluids not dispense them, thats what a funnel is for

I dont clean the hose either, just coil it up so it doesnt dripp everywhere and call it a day. On the rare occasion I do clean it, just a few sprays of brake clean , pump, then repeat does a great job

Thats the third party price which includes additional shipping. Shows $86 from Amazon on the right hand side area.

I havent had any problems with the top drain plug at all. I just flip the metal lever until its loose then pull up on lever. But that is a clever trick using the pump to pop it off

I usually would use a funnel to dispense/pour as well.. (did so for my ****** fluid) but was nearly impossible to refill the diff with a funnel without taking it off the car! Was hoping the dispense feature would be awesome. And i guess you're right... cleaning the hose/drum really is only necessary when using dispense feature.

I have one of those (different brane name? but looks identical), and it does work, but its quite slow since I have to use the smallest hose. It takes like 30 mins to fully **** all the oil out, but I'd rather wait for this thing than jack the car up and get all dirty. The only reason I bought mine was because the oil filter is on the top of the motor, so I have no reason to jack it up at all. If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't have bothered since I'd have to get under there anyways
