is it just me or does the mityvac really **** and is very ineffective towards what it is supposed to do. all ours does is **** its self in or just pick up air even when the hose is fully submerged and the seal on the top is not leaking.

i think it was one of the more regretful tools i have bought. hasn't worked right since new.

what is your experience with this device for extracting and replacing fluid?

There are other better fluid evacuators out there for larger tasks with the better ones also being made by Mityvac.
Are we talking about the silverline metal Mityvac or the lesser plastic model?
I've never had a problem with mine over the years. However, if a petrol based fluid like atf, power steering fluid, or brake fluid gets sucked into the pump chamber, it will kill the seals. The metal silverline pumps are rebuildable though. I've always thought the Mityvac silverline hand pump was one of the best tools ever made but, I mostly use mine to bleed power steering reservoirs and testing components.

I have the silverline too. Do you have the tool (adaptor) to do GM power steering bleeds? Is so, where can I get it? Is it a Kent Moore special deal that I have to buy a whole kit? I have a GM car and I need to do this. I understand from reading the shop manual that this vacuum test is to verify/make sure nothing is leaking internally in the pump fitting O-rings. I have done the bleed procedure and I seem to keep getting a small amount of bubbles after some time.

I put in a Delco remanufactured pump and I have to say it was the biggest piece of **** I have ever put in a car. A Kragen ChiCom pump would have probably been better. It made me realize that GM went bankrupt for a reason.

I really do think the weird noises I have been getting are the rack though. It sounds like a whistling in the steering column when you turn the wheel at low speeds. It comes and goes.

Which Mityvac are you talking about? They have dozens of types of tools across several product lines. I have 5 of them and they all work fine.

mine is the white plastic one with the bike pump on the side.

i think i only used it to syphon out watered down gas and oil out of a briggs gocart motor and it wasn't good enough to do even that.

bought it through cornwell about 4 years ago. dealer is gone and i don't know who to bring it to if it even has a warranty?

he's talking about a fuild evauator NOT a hand vacuum pump.

i don't know why yours doesn't work. mine will evacuate a cooling system in about 6-8 pumps.

took me 30 minutes to get a quart of ****** fluid out of my truck so i could add a bottle of adative.

wasn't sucking air, it just wasn't pumping

I have one of the old, original mityvacs I bought from JC Whitney over 30 years ago, and it still works fine. Pulls great vacuum for checking system leaks, diaphragm operation of EGR valves, etc.
