Does anyone mix and match tool boxes? Like you've got a nice 55 or 72" bottom box and end up needing more space for whatever reason, do you get a matching top box or some other brand?

Depends the layout you want. Some companies make different drawer combos, so SO may have the ultimate bottom box, but you like the machinist's mini drawers on your old Craftsman top boxes. Why not - if it works for you, remember, you're the one who has to work out of the box.

I've also seen cross-sized boxes - a 84" bottom with a 54" top and use the rest for a mini bench. I thought it sounded odd, but the more I looked, the more common it seems that is.

I'm dead set on getting a 55x25 Extreme bottom box. We went to HF the other day for a transfer pump and of course I checked out the tool boxes. I looked at the tool chests and thought I could get a 56 if I decided I needed a top box. Then I thought maybe a smaller one and use my old Craftsman because those 3 small drawers are handy for drill bits and stuff as I use them for now.

Also I might happen into a buy on a SO top chest or something.
