Mixed feelings for Sears

Picked up a new mower in February. I had some gift cards and I wanted to take my 8 year old Craftsmen mower to my shop. Well, i didn't take it out of its box until last weekend. Gases it, oiled it, pulled it, and mowed with it.
About 10 minutes in I realized that it pulled a little to the left and was kind of hard to push. I lifted the drive wheels into the air and realized only the right wheel was turning. I pushed the left wheel in toward the mower and it would grab, but not really pull. I noticed that the nut on the left wheel wasn't on the axle but about 2 turns. Tried to tighten it, but it must have been crossed. Took it off and sure enough, the plastic drive teeth on the wheel are toast. I figured new mower, get it replaced.

Called Sears. The kid on the phone said to bring it in. They wouldn't replace it, but they would repair the broken parts. I asked if there would be a charge for the repair. Kid said no, " mower is covered for 1 year.".

Load it up, drive 45 minutes to Sears, go inside and talk to a manager. I let her know what the kid on the phone said. She said you only have 30 days for replacement. I showed her the bolt on the wheel. I told her that I would wait on the repairs to be done. Est. (14 days). I thought no problem, I still have my old mower. She said I have a 2 year warranty on the motor only. She asked if I had purchased the extended warranty. $80 plus tax. She said she would make it good, but I needed to purchase an extended warranty. I said thanks but no thanks. I could replace the wheel at sears for $15. She said we will just replace your mower " but you really need to purchase the extended warranty."

Again I said "thank you". Out came a new mower. She helped me load it. And I was on my way.

1. She didn't have to replace the mower. ( but she did)
2. The mower does come with a 1 year warranty. You can buy 2 extra years, but they call it a 3 year warranty.
3. I never buy a warranty.
4. I think she was doing a good job trying to up sale a return.

My question. How would you have handled this?

i would have handled it the exact same way. I went in the other night to have a basic 1/4" ratchet replaced..... they told me to pick out any 1/4" ratchet, recommending the 84 tooth $50 ratchet which i took him up on. Not sure if it was strong customer service or a lack of business sense, but i was dealing with the manager. I am very curious to see what happens to Sears in the next 5 years and the associated impact to Craftsman...

same stuff i find at sears alot around here, helpful, willing to get you in and out quickly, and want to get you exactly what you want, even as far as calling every other sears for you to see what they can do if they have the parts/items, etc.

i've had to replace non sears items, walked in with a combination ratcheting wrench from gearwrench, took 5 minutes and i had a new one. no problems with sears yet.

I find that if you are reasonable, and friendly,a good store with good well trained employees will take care of you. it is their job to serve the customer, and keep your business. Slap an STP sticker on that new mower, and go cut some grass!!

Sears is really into the extended warranty thing now. I wouldn't get it for a mower but I have their Master Repair Protection Agreement on all my major appliances. You can get coverage on any brand major appliance. This plan will replace the equipment, with comparable featured item, if it can't be repaired and it covers all parts and labor.

The plan is renewable and is reasonably priced. So far I have had great success with the plan. In the last 6 years I have had over $3800 in covered repairs and full replacement for a Washer and an Advantium oven. All this cost me about $1200 total. This is one extended warranty I highly recommend.

I think you did very well, I'd have given up before you did. That said, Sears will never be the company it once was. I suppose time has just done them in with the Walmart mentality of our world but they used to be THE PLACE to be for no questions asked quality.

Any company that buys K-Mart is living in the past. K-Mart is similar to Sears in being a once great company.

Anyone here remember Otasco, JM Fields, Sky City, Western Auto?

Replacing an entire mower instead of replacing a $15 wheel and .50 cent bolt. Sounds like a company on the brink of bankruptcy.

Went to Sears to purchase tool. while there customer comes in with a box with about 50 wrenches assorted sockets and ratchets all rusted. Said he bought them at yard sale for 2 bucks and wanted to get new tools under warranty. The salesman gave him a new tool for every one in box. now that's a warranty!

Unfortunately the nearest Sears to me is over an hour away in Hippieville (aka: Asheville) and they have young kids working in the tool section who are clueless about tools and care even less about customer service. I used to be a big fan of Sears (especially Craftsman) but I think its really gone downhill since K-Mart got into the mix with them. JMHO.

Sears is not Sears anymore. (S) Now it is Sears Holding company. (SHLD) After Sears decided to buy some 50+ stores from Kmart and Kmart had filed for reorganization under bankruptcy protection. They then took that money and did a leverage buyout of Sears and even though the store front says Sears it is run by CEO Edward "Eddie" Lampert former CEO of Kmart. If you shop at Sears take note that at one time on your receipt it would be printed "Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back". Thats gone and now has something like 30 or 90 day warranty or return policy. Just not the Sears I grew up with!

Sears did not buy K Mart, it was the other way around.

Not so much. they replaced the item for the customer, which made him happy. They will fix the item and resell it in their scratch & dent, returned/repaired section. So they aren't loosing money it. I've bought several of the returned items.

The Sears in Orange Park, FL used to have a big tent sale a couple times a years with all the items that were clearanced, discontinued, returned, repaired or whatever that they couldn't sell as NEW. One example is my 6hp 33 gal compressor that was a returned item, it had a few minor things wrong. But I bought it for $100 less than a new one. I bought the warranty and a year later had everything fixed. I bought that compressor over 15 years ago and it is still running strong.

Do you really believe it is a 6 HP compressor? Sorry I could not resist as Sears is about the worst in their shyster HP claims.

I am glad that there are people that will take care of the customer though, it has got to the point where the Craftsman name means the same as the skull & cross bones to me, same for any other Sears brand. Perhaps there is a chance of redemption for Sears.

Why isn't the story of the thread as follows: (1) I made the mistake of not opening and checking a lawn mower within 30 days, as I know I should but (2) Sears went above and beyond and hooked me up with a new mower despite my mistake?

Tough crowd -- even when Sears seems to do something well, best it can get is mixed feelings.

fyi, went thru Sears store in route to another retailer. Noticed many larger Craftsman tool cabinet inventory close outs. Had some new stock of "HD series" cabinets on the floor. I imagine more downgrades in product performance/quality "cost reductions" soon? If they focused on quality general mechanics tools vs trying to make the heavier larger specialized "sell one a year items" they could control costs and inventory much better.

Last time I walked into the local Sears & Sawbuck, they were holding their "Sell out to the bare walls" sale - they closed by the start of this year. They've since opened a smaller outlet in an older grocery building.
In looking at their astronomically high priced tool boxes (On the display floor, at least), I've always noticed that their drawer widths were never as much as 41" - even the bigger boxes were divided section stuff, because the drawers are built so cheaply (Thin) that they can't support the weight over that length without bending... The socket sets, open end/combination wrenches, etc. all had a wonderful finish but break at the worst times, ratchet drives don't work for long, etc.
I used to buy a lot of tools from Sears - 45 years ago or so - but after the poor performance of a replacement torque wrench, a couple of screwdriver trade-ins, and a few other transactions, I just don't go there anymore. Luckily, I still have most of my old stuff that is bullet proof - including a Western Auto 6" adjustable wrench from about 40+ years ago...
Satisfaction guaranteed??? LOL...

I went the other night to check out the fluke meters only to find them yanked from the display wall. Manager said they dropped Fluke, didn't know why....

I hardly ever get an extended warranty either. I bought a new mower last year and after the second mowing, I noticed the mower sat crooked. Then when I looked at the left rear tire, I had picked up a big piece of metal that ended up going through the sidewall on the inside. Luckily, a new inner tube saved it. Why does this S--T always happen to me? :dunno:

Been buying Sears stuff for over 45 yrs, They have been reliable until, last yr, i bought a lithium battery (large) for my 19.2 drill, I have 5 other drills with NiCad. I keep it in my motorhome. I didnt use it for about 5 mo. Charged it with proper charger and only holds 1/2 charge attempted several times for a full charge, needless to say a piece of $hit, went to Sears (formerly a great place) and was told sorry no reciept. Sorry about the rant, but honestly I've invested over 5K in tools over time and Ill probably never shop there again ,as my 19.2 drills fade away, I'll go somewhere else. As my dad used to say, "either swear by them or at them" the time has come to "at them"

I'm glad you got good customer service. The Sears around here is the absolute worst and it is to the point where I won't shop there to save my life. To the sales associates that chit chat near the register while I walk around and won't help with my questions ( telling me they don't know and I could probably find the item on the web site is not good customer service btw), by giving me a hard time returning a jacket that was an X-mas gift right after I got it because some stiching was bad (not even worn yet) and I had a gift receipt has made me jaded on the store.

I don't buy anything at Sears anymore, and haven't for several years.

As a general rule, their merchandise is overpriced, low quality **** (much of which can be bought at Wally World for 50% less). Additionally, their sales staff are poorly trained and it's a 50/50 chance you'll get one with an attitude problem.

I roomed with a guy one weekend a month(playing GI joe in the AF Reserves Niagra Falls NY. he was from Jamestown and I from Rochester, well we got to talking one day and he told me he worked at Crescent tools. Just out of plain generosity he said need tools? He brought me bags of "reject" wrenches and a lot more because they were deemed as seconds, Overpolished ,scratched etc. It's been 40 yr and still have most. I wish Sears would become good again.

we've had to take a few items back for the lifetime warranty on Craftsman stuff but the parts are no longer made and no substitute was available. There really isn't an advantage anymore buying Craftsman because the warranty isn't what it once was. We tried to buy on two occasions appliances - a refridge and washer & dryer. Both times we wanted a generic basic white. We live in a city of 3 million people and Sears said it would take a week to have them shipped up from Los Angeles cause they no longer stock applicances locally. We bought the items from Lowes on both occasions and had them that evening delivered. We rarely visit Sears for anything anymore - too much of a hassle to deal with them. In fact - you can contact their parts dept and they will tell you they have a part IN STOCK ready to ship within 24 hours. They will take your money and bill your credit or debit card, then 3 or 4 days later when you are wondering where the part is and you call them to follow-up, they will tell you they were out and it is backordered for 90 days, and then hassle you if you try to cancel. We avoid them when we can.

I would have handled it by not buying a Sears lawn mower in the first place.... :dunno:

Far to many better deals out there on "dead" mowers with barely any hours on them. Push mowers are disposable anyway...
