The Proto Los Angeles dates back to the 50's. Followed by the Proto usa mark.

SC: nice method of getting the paint off the old Proto sockets. at least you received all the same brand of sockets. I've got a few sets in the past where the owners were selling a name brand set, but half of them were off brand cheap ones.

if you want to shine those up so you can see yourself in them you might want to get a deburring wheel for your bench grinder or buffer. i do like your method of taking the paint off, but it looks like your old "throwaway" extension is a Craftsman "V" series or is it a VV?

My Proto sets were all put together one piece at a time 30 years ago, scouring flea markets, pawn shops, and swap meets. I've got various generations of Protos in each set, just as you do. I wouldn't sweat it. The Protos are still the toughest sockets in my box, hands down.

SC: you know that Mothers on a cloth probably will work great. Deburring works great on raw cast or steel and might not do as good of a job on chrome. i'm going to put a deburring wheel on my Baldor buffer and see if i can shine up a few things soon.

are the aluminum jaws in the picture you posted or are those the metal ones holding the V extension. interesting that it fits better than less quality one you really wanted to use. Quality tools do seem to have just that little extra don't they?

Very nice set:rocker::thumbup::thumbup: I also pick them up one at a time in garage sales, junk shops, etc.;funny thing that made me laugh, but we have this fruit cake on my local cl asking just wild crazy prices for sockets, something like $25.00 each and if you buy her 40 rusty wrenches the price comes out to $989.00 dollars. Wow a person could walk into sears and buy a lot of tools for that amount.

This is just one of her ads the other ad was for her wrench prices.

Woody: that lady needs you to stop by and give her some help. she is just not wanting to give her husband's old tools away is my guess. she might also really need the money so a fair offer might help her a lot if there is anything there you can use. it really is sad what some widows are left with when their husbands pass.

SC: let us know if you do try the Mothers and take a few more pictures. or if you get that deburring wheel and grinder up and running.

I've got a pieced together old Proto set at home that are pretty cruddy with a little rust on some.

Gonna try your lathe method to maybe give back a little of the shimmer that they once had.

Good job!

SC: so if it took 20 seconds to take the paint off. how long to put the Mother's polish on? also i don't see a huge difference, but i'm guessing you do in person. yes??

thanks for sharing. i'm getting a Shopsmith so maybe i can use it to do the same?

I'm a little late to this thread, but that proto set is a great buy! You can also get paint off fairly readily with just Purple Power without much work. Or other paint remover. Why scratch up tools in the first place? I do like the polishing methods. Those are nice and shiny now! I have various Proto/Fleet/Challenger, all top quality. - Paul

I just got this 1/2 drive Proto socket set today.
About what time period are these from? I haven't been able to find much other than the LA sockets being from 49-56. Them having the same * makes me think the other * sockets are of a similar time. My head is spinning :shocking:

The * indicates the flat that has a detent. Can't help you on the age, but I think you did fine on the purchase.
