So I have my detached garages out 20 feet from the house and attached garage with copper stub for a heater. Never put a heater in there as it stays above 35 degrees all winter.
Here's my question.....I want NG in new detached garage. What are you guys using for gas line to detached garages in MN. I can not get anyone to tell me what to use or what code is. Not even the gas company. That say they have to send out a technician and that will cost$$. But they don't know how much.
What to use....bury copper some say. Some say black iron pipe. Others say goto menards get black plastic pipe and be done with it.
Gas company can't even tell me hoe deep to bury it......

Any advice? Thanks

That's just it....can't get answered. Doesn't seem to be a code. Could that be possible? I live in newly developed subdivision. No inspectors ever checked my homes supply or in house set up. Contractors for gas company come out dig line, throw pipe in with meter, fill trench in and call it a day. No pressure test there or in home. I even talked with the technician putting in supply line to neighbors house last fall....he said " lots of guys put in copper direct bury". They (contractors for gas company) use special plastic pipe (with what he reported as $300 terminal ends to goto meter), that consumers and contractors down have access to. Talked with licensed plumbers (who you think would know local code) and they all have their opinions.
I was hoping that there might be a few people(mn maybe familiar with MN code-se mn more specifically)in plumbing/HVAC that could help out....still scratching my head. Thanks tho.

It could very well be that any material nationally certified for gas use is accepted. I assume you are just tapping off your existing supply downstream of the meter?

You can buy the approved plastic on line buti think it is in 100 ft rolls only.

If there is no code , we used to use black iron and then coat it with undercoating , and if your in sandy soill it will last for ever . They Still used coated steel piping for the larger hi pressure transmission lines and it's coated . They have done that for yrs and yrs and most of the pipe is still in the ground. How do I know , because I worked on the first gas transmission line. Here in the U.P in 1966 and it's never been touched since then .
Copper is a no, no . It will flake with material gas.
