I have a 6 gallon pancake air compressor used for nail gun, impact wrench, and general tire service. I was getting tired of lugging this compressor around, so I decided to build that mobile air cart design that is all over the internet.
I made a few changes to the basic design that better meet my needs. I added an access hole on the side in order to reach the on/off lever, see the pressure regulator gauges, and adjust the regulator knob. Around back I added a mouse hole which allows access to the drain valve and enables the accumulated moisture to land on the concrete floor rather than the wooden cart. Also, next to the mouse hole is a 2 x 4 step for your foot to assist in tilting the cart back when preparing to move it. The original design included open shelves on the side of the cart for storage. I opted instead for an enclosed box with a hinged lid that has room for my impact wrench, impact sockets, nail guns, and air tool accessories.
This cart normally sits plugged into the wall in a central location in my shop where the 25' hose can reach my assembly bench, as well as, all four tires of a vehicle on my lift. When not needed, the hose can be stowed up off the floor. Best of all, it can be easily wheeled to the far corners of my shop, out to the driveway, or around the side of the house where ever it is needed.
