Mobile oven

Hey all,

A neighbor gave me an electric oven and it fits ferfectly in my rolling workbench. This workbench is large enough to house the oven as well as store a table saw and chop saw.

I want to wire this oven in and keep the unit "mobile". What's the best way to go about this? Wire an extension cord (4 wire) to the oven? Put in a inlet box on the bench and wire to oven?

I already have a receptacle on the wall.

I'm guessing this is a wall oven, which probably means it was designed to be hard-wired in a wall somewhere. I would do a short run of short run of flex conduit with individual conductors to a junction box on the back of the rolling bench, then transition to a flexable "range cord" with the proper strain relief that will plug into your wall receptacle.

The reason I recommend the short conduit run with conductors is I don't know how hot the area immediatly around the oven would get, so I wouldn't want to run flexable cable straight to the oven power inlet junction box.

TxAgs, this is a great idea.
I have been watching Craigslist for a good single wall oven to build into a box on wheels for baking powder coat, heating parts, etc. I was thinking I could roll it under my welding table when not in use.

I really like the idea of building it into a rolling workbench, especially since I am starting to plan a rolling bench already.
Now I have to start on a new design.

As for the power connection, I think using a "shore power" inlet receptacle (think RV hookup) on the mobile bench would allow the cord to be connected when needed, or pulled and hung on a wall hook when not in use.

first question would be what are the power requirements of the oven? 30 amps or 50 amps? 3 wire or 4 ?

You need to check how many watts. The ovens that I have checked all only needed 30. You might need 50 for a stove/oven.

I've seen this before...Ikea's oven cabinets are 'freestanding' and it is common in Europe to NOT have a 'fitted' kitchen (built-in, like most kitchens in the U.S.) There is nothing unusual about having a 'temporarily installed' oven.

Go get a heavy duty dryer cord at the box store. Wire it to the oven. Make sure your outlet matches the cord (I suspect an oven needs the 4-prong 120/240 plug). Done.

Yes, this is a wall mount oven and needs a 50 amp service, 4 wire. It already has about 6 ft of flexible conduit running from the oven. I think what I will do is get a heavy duty RV cable and wire in with a good strain relief. I promise to post photos soon.

I found a free wall oven on Craigslist. It is on the small side but since I never powder coated before it will give me a chance to play around.

It is convection. I didn't time how long it took to get to 400 but it wasn't long.

I guess it's hard to see the temp with the glare. Even the light works.

Anyone doing powder coating? What type of gun would you recommend? Any tips on doing the coating?
