Modding a Craftsman toolbox?

Hi all,

This box is on the club sale this month and comes up to a little over $260 (plus tax). I thought it could be kinda cool for extra storage, but I'm not a huge fan of the drawer layout.
Does anybody know how the slides/drawers are attached to the toolbox frame and how easy it would be to move the drawers around? Are they riveted, bolted, welded ... ? I've never owned any of their boxes, and I've never really looked at them that carefully at the store.
For example, I would like to put one of the deeper drawers at the top and move the split drawers more towards the middle.
I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. Thanks.

i would assume quite diificult to move and support the narrow drawers unless moving them completely to the bottom. the wide drawers may or may not have mounting positions to reposition them. if not i would think some careful measuring drilling and grinding could put them in a differant location.

I'm not sure how the 'quiet glide' series slides attach, but if they are anything like the basic home owners series, you won't be able to move them around too easy. On the basic home owners series, the rails attach to guides that are formed onto the inner side walls (which are not moveable). HTH

That's a bummer! I'm not sure this is worth all the grinding/drilling and welding that it would require. Oh well, I'll keep looking for better options. Thanks again.

Been covered before, search under slides and drawer swap.

It's been awhile so here goes anyway;

You can't put bearing slides or anything else on the box. It would be just about as easy to fabricate your own box from scratch. The friction slide mounts are built in. Quiet glide is friction with plastic sleeves on the runners.
You can often swap the drawers around but on many of them Craftsman saved a few cents by only placing drawer lockers in locations used.
Example, on the 4 drawer chest, ball bearing, Griplatch, quiet glide or regular, you could swap the big drawer to the top, but you could not lock it. You could also not lock the two small drawers you put on the bottom in its place.

This may or may not apply to the 11 drawer as most the drawers below the little drawers look about the same size. So no reason to swap them.

Little drawers and big drawers won't swap without major rebuilding of the box.
Pretty much, what you see is what you get.
