hope you are getting some better weather cause it looks like spring here after we had 2 feet of snow 3 weeks ago and it snowed last friday too. 60's and sunny which really can help our attitudes.

Andy, drives and Jim; All. Thanks for your prayers and support. Attached are some pictures of the porch project now complete except for the flooring and I have to move the freezer once I get time to clean out the shed. The sun was almost down when the pictures where shot so the color is washed out. Check out the brackets holding the plants. Antique shelf brackets, nice deep ones slated for my shop on loan for Ginny's flowers until I get time to make some.

Bobby, I'm glad to hear the doctors are playing it safe with Sarah's digestive tract. The feeding tube sounds like something that's hard to get used to. If she can think of other, more pleasant things, some of the discomfort may subside. If I think about my phantom hand, it balls up into a fist and the fingernails dig into its palm. The discomfort goes away if I concentrate on something else (a stubbed toe works well). Let Sarah know we're cheering her on (in a quiet way).

Your porch looks very inviting and the wood walls are a perfect accent with the kayak. It might be time to take a break and savor the view of the BB Estate.

Thanks Rick. It is gratifying to see wood instead of painted framing where the kayak hangs. I have a hickory tree at a friend's house I have to take down come spring. I intend to mill it into lumber designated for handles; say two inch and 1 1/2. I want to carve a kayak paddle all one piece and hang over the door opposite the kayak.

Good to know. I have found that working them green with a draw knife can be tough for tear out. On the rare occasion I am able to cut a piece on the lathe dried hickory cuts a lot better. The opposite is true with persimmon as it gets pulpy and needs to be sanded to appear smooth. The persimmon is harder if worked green then dried also.

Got a workout yesterday this is the end of the first load should be 300 bricks picked up, loaded, cleaned and stacked. Front pile darker bricks are just over 200. I probably have two more loads some are columns that will have to be loaded with a bucket unless I can break them apart. Some of the mortar is old and some is later. I have to take them all so if the columns do not clean I will be swinging a sledge and using them to slug my pad pours for a good while.

I spent yesterday cleaning brick with a brick hammer and cleaned over one hundred. I believe I will try an air chisel next. It's a little slower but my hands can't take any more pounding. Ginny is trying to get me to take a break today and I may give in as it is the smarter thing to do. Am a little slow on smart sometimes. Weather and opportunity, as you know only cooperate through small windows. I want to have what I need when the time comes to start a project.

Ginny sounds pretty smart. I'm like you, and try to push the endurance limit. But my wife reins me in at dinnertime (or I don't eat), even though I want to keep working. My stomach usually wins that argument (along with my wife)!

Thank you my friends. Here are some views through the porch windows I took yesterday afternoon as the sun began to set.

This log is so heavy it picked up the heavy wall box tubing at the far end a foot off of the ground. It took me half the afternoon to get it wrestled onto the carriage and set for cutting. It is 12 feet long and 19 inches in diameter. The carriage can handle 24 inches but the sawyer is tired.

No 2x4's for this log. Like to find a stand of cypress someone wanted down to make a log cabin out of. Sun room is where we eat supper lately. Hard to leave it once I sit/lay down.

Thanks drives. I had counted on most of the bricks coming from the column that had been knocked down but was still intact. No such luck. The one I dug out of the dirt had old mortar. The one still standing was put together with concrete. It will need to be jackhammered and nothing would be left but rubble. I'm sure the owner will be more disappointed than I am when he hears that. Glad I told him I would only take it IF I could break it apart. A sledge would not budge but a few brick chips and pieces. It's about five feet high and two foot square; solid through the center with brick chips and concrete.

No metal so far. The bottom log will be cut by someone else as I do not have a way to get it on and my blade is too small and will waste too much of it.

Started canting the big log late yesterday. Should have it square sometime today as I have to care for a neighbor and entertain some guests in the meantime. I also got the rest of the bricks yesterday. The column was put together with concrete and the bricks just break apart with the hammer. The owner is going to try dropping it with his loader and said he will call me if it looks like it will break up. Retirement is hard work; but fun; I think?

You all want dust I give you dust! This is from one log and not the biggest. Boards are mostly twelve inch and a few ten. Most are full one inch a few are three quarter. One each two by four lumber yard size and full size. Nice grain as shown and clear. Southern yellow pine. All are twelve feet long.

Are you stickering all your boards flat, or using the windrow style of upright drying?

Nice boards! That's a lot of lumber from one cant - I'll bet the bigger log will yield only a few more boards.

Love the clear grain - that's better quality than you can get from most lumber yards.
