Got the material for building my smithy today. Have the tin for the roof already but will start on it tomorrow. Getting cold here 64 was today's high (don't laugh my New England blood has thinned out in the last 27 years.) Got to get it done now so I can stay warm when it gets below 50. I'll post pictures when it gets along.

Well yesterday was a treat. I picked up 2X8 instead of 2X6 rafters for a tin roof; talk about overkill. They almost killed me. I thought they were kind of heavy 10 footers but passed it off to wet wood as I was in a hurry. The total was also higher than I expected at the register but I passed that off to taxes. I must have been asleep. Apparently they were in the wrong bay so I lose as the cost was not wrong. When I tried to run the first stringer to the first post I almost ripped out a three year old gut repair. I finally got two stringers and two posts up and my framing gun blew out; so did the spare. I think they are just froze up from lack of use so that is the first job for this morning. Wonder why I have learned all this? Everything I touch turns to S... then I have to build it over. That's why I wear gloves hee hee !

Well here is the Smithy as built. I will be adding a forge with hood in the center and a railroad track anvil of sorts. Got the hood from a friend who is in the junk business for $10 and it is real nice. All will be welded together with flat bar to discourage thieves. All my other equipment will be in the shop. When all is in position I will take pictures from inside and out. Still need to put more screws in the roof steel.

Thanks to all. I will post more pictures when every thing is in place. Getting pumped up to get back to basics but have to at least get back on the Mustang next week or it will never be ready for spring showing. I have been paying for my forge on a payment plan in order to reserve it and keep it out of my way until this was done. Now I'm a man who has two women showing up at the same time???? What a dilemma ! Stay tuned for "Shop Shame" where the passion lies...............

Just found this close up of the Rat Rod just after I did a frame off and repaired and rebuilt the cab. Most of the original paint. Thought you might like to see it under the lights. Bobby

What can you tell me about post vises? I'd like to be a little more knowledgeable about them.

Jaws open at an angle as they get wider so does the angle so for wide stuff it can slip out. Also if you are looking at one make sure it has the spring that pushes the jaws open as you screw out and that it is not cracked. Opens fast so it's nice for hot work where you are trying to juggle as you put the piece in.

Turns out that the pipe for my forge vent hood ended up smack in the middle of two high ridges on the smithy sheet metal roof. Creates a dam behind the 8 inch pipe. Valley is smaller so no way around location except to run a ridge in the center which would have located it to close to the rafter and in an inconvenient spot. I used a ridge cap (the one for the center ridge board on the gable) to make a "Cricket" I bent tabs on it to follow peaks in the roof and it works great. Finished with the hood but I have more work to try to find leaks on the main barn that are still there. I will post pictures of the forge and finished Smithy probably tomorrow. Bobby

Now your Smithy brings back a whole heap of memories for me, it has come up a treat, beautiful work.

My grand father had a Smithy at the family farm and I have fond memories as kids we would spend hours in there making stuff.

Fortunately my uncle, as a volunteer at a local museum has been able to recreate the smithy using many of his tools in a display there.

Charleston is a beautiful place to experience some of the better things the U.S. still has to offer. Its working people to name an example. Keep moving and they can't throw dirt on you! Bobby

Bobby, a trip to the States is on our bucket list for sure and would be honoured to visit.

I was just looking at your Smithy again and I can remember my grandfathers smithy floor was from well trodden gavel, the shed frame was from 8 inch Murray Pine tree trunks and corrugated iron walls. I still have the leg vise and a few tools. The benches were red gum timber with the storage shelves made from gasoline timber boxes.
Old nuts, bolts, washers and fitting were hung from the ceiling rafters with rusty fencing wire and there were heaps of tobacco tins in the shelves with rivets and fittings.

1/2 cup I am thinking about what I could hang that is useful and not an item someone would be likely to steal. We do not have a big theft problem in our area, and I have helped people enough around here that I would like to believe the word is out to leave me alone. Who knows? I have also been known to stand in the middle of the highway and stop people that were driving like fools in the neighborhood and reeducate the driver to proper manners for driving in areas with children. All that aside, hanging things like tools is out of the question as I do not want to tempt fate. But, hanging things like nuts on a wire sounds interesting. Sounds like he may have used them to hang things up on to cool. Good idea. Not to mention that's what some of the kids around here thought I was growing up , NUTS, and learned to drive slower past my farm, and have some respect for others. Hope to see you some day. I might be a little naïve about what you have going on there Bobby, but I would love to see you and have you share some of your vast knowledge with me. I love the anvil. It looks to be very meaty. That is such a thing from the world so long ago. Nice to see that there are some people out there that can bring back a piece of the past. And if 1/2 cup ever shows up at your place, I hope that I could stop in to be apart of the conversation that would go on. I would learn a lot. Again, please keep sharing, as this thread has become one of my favorite ones to drop in on and learn things. You are a very interesting man with a wealth of knowledge.

My grand fathers smithy leaked like a sieve, glad to hear that yours is ok.

A trip to the States is just so tempting right now but will have to wait until I retire at this point. It would be fantastic to meet with all of you guys and share our learnings.

Sounds great to me also. Australia looks like it may be the only country in the world soon where everything still makes good sense. Everywhere else common sense seems to be going out of style. I'm up for company anytime. It's the only excuse I have to stop this madness.
Wish I could find the leak in the main barn roof as it is running down and ending up in my machine shop. I was on that roof again for half a day. I could see the leak in the rain yesterday from down below, but up on top everything looks good. Only four rubber backed screws that could be letting it leak and run down unless I have a leak that can defy gravity. I caulked them with the best sealer on the market today and if it leaks now you should all hear me scream from wherever you are.

Well the 66 Mustang convertible just took another trophy; that's two for two. This car competed with two Shelby's and three other nice convertibles. There were fifteen Mustangs in all. Sure nice to do something besides work on them. I didn't do much on this one, except know a good candidate for showing when I see it, but wouldn't you be just as proud of an adopted daughter as one you built from scratch? Oh by the way, because it's November, the trophy has a turkey on top of it. Now how did they know it would end up in my garage?

Thanks! Got to finish up the 4 speed for the GT tomorrow then tune up the Victoria as someone is coming to look at it next week. It will be sad to see it go but I have to make room for the lift before it rusts away waiting for me to restore it. That should be an interesting rebuild. Have to get the fork lift up and running first though. Who says these are labor saving devices?

Thanks! Victoria is running smooth. Was up on the roof all day yesterday. Will be up there again for the next two days sealing the entire seam 36 feet. Pulled nails and replaced 200 hundred screws on the gable yesterday. Still bent over like a man with a cane but without the cane.

Man I know the feeling. I am now third day on the roof chasing a leak, my wood is almost all split, and I am beginning to think that knowing how to do it is as much of a curse as a blessing. But, if I sit down at the end of the day and rest, after doing another man's work, and fighting another man's fight, that's a bad tired. And, if instead, I have done my work, fought my fight, and lived my life; well that's a good tired. What I feel is a good tired.
Someone once said; Happiness is having someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for! How true! Hope everyone out there has someone to love. I know you all have something to do, and something to hope for!

Found these pictures of the wrecker the day I traded it to the dealer. I had taken the boom off for the show. Once the trade was made I had to reinstall it. Thought it would be nice to see it without the wrecker boom. Check out the original style sticker price in the window.
