Working on getting some tooling to grind reamers and round stock. I will be trying the blade welder in the next few days when the wood is split and put up.

On my **** again. Threw my back out splitting wood. Couldn't stand (no pun intended) being able to walk again. Good news is it hurts so much I don't notice the ankle much :D

Got out to the shop for a little while and figured out how I am going to adapt my center points and how to sharpen reamers and milling bits. My blade welder is not working properly and as soon as I can lift it up on the bench I will tear it down. Looks like something is not connected that moves the movable jaw to induct heat increase from the transformer. I don't know if it has been tampered with or just frozen. I need Vieux to tell me how to reengineer it maybe? I hope it is something simple though.

I used to use one of those blade welders and they sure work well when they work. The built in grinder is a nice touch. I bet it will be something simple.

Bobby, I am sure Vieux would do that in the blink of an eye. That said unless the transformer is burnt out I am sure it should be a relatively simple fix. The were all made so that they could be repaired..

Good to know 1/2 thanks. I should be able to get it on the bench this week. I am trying to chill out and wait on my back a few more days.

I can see that the movable jaw does not move when the blade width dial knob is turned or when I call for weld. I can move the (potentiometer?) 360 degrees with very little resistance but do not know if that is normal yet. Once I can get it apart more should be evident.

I can feel the blade get hot and some smoke rising (don't know where it is coming from) I get a spark when I throw the weld lever but it seems to have limited travel compared to the utube videos. Blade never gets red though. Right now it is next to my welder on a low stand and I cannot bend over enough to investigate further.

Update. I got the welder and the annealing button to work intermittently. I suspect some corrosion in the system that should be easy to fix. However, the movable jaw does not move even with help so it just burns the ends of the blades as it does not feed. I will have to see inside. Probably more corrosion.

Success! I found the movable jaw with a spring (possibly not original but at the least with the hook loop missing and the end of the spring bent into a loop) I got the spring "loop" straightened out and into the original configuration. I made a loop then hooked it up. I reset the open close parameters then cleaned the main contacts for the welder. The blade was prepared than inserted for welding. Pictures show the weld being made and the finished weld. Bent into a loop after annealing but not ground the weld held nicely. :beer2:

Congratulations! That welder will be handy.

I've never seen one not mounted on a band saw. I imagine somebody removed it, or did they sell them separately?

1/2 It was beauty to behold when the sparks flew. It was even better to bend the blade into an arc.

Bobby, well done..

It would be quite a relief to get it working...

Andy they did make them without the saw. I used one just like this in high school but who remembers how after one time? I will get plenty of use out of it as I have four band saws and got a box of blades with the stuff. I don't know if they fit the band saw or just came with the welder but either way should be of some use. The welder had not been used in some time and had been disabled either on purpose or breakage. When set up as properly it is quite a marvel of design. I will have to find a blade shear now to make it easier to cut the blades. They came with shears but I don't know if for later models or this one is just missing. I'm pretty sure that you could get one new from DoAll but I bet they would be pricey even though they are manual.

The shears are several hundred. I have decided to just use aviation snips or a die grinder. Going to make a table stand for the die grinder next week. I will try to photo the process.

The problem is sometimes the amount of blade left when one brakes does not leave much and the smaller the cut the more blades can be saved. Plus, I do not have a cutoff saw. It is a good idea it's what made me think of the die grinder with a small wheel. Great minds think alike!

I was on the wrong page. When a blade brakes (unless through abuse) it is usually fatigued and at the end of it's life.

Real savings in buying bulk blade material and cutting it to length for welding. Plus you'll have hundreds of feet of coiled blade when you go.:headscrat

I definitely plan to do that as it gets a $20 blade down to $5. Sometimes though the new blades have poor welds or while trying to cut an angle the blade grabs and breaks when the piece moves and that breaks it. Either way good to have this toy. :dunno:

BB: i'm really sorry i haven't stopped in and made a post on your thread yet so here's my first of probably many more to come. i'll need a week to catch up on your doings since you started this thread and even if i don't get a chance to read what you've done in the past maybe i can keep up with your present and future adventures.

so you mentioned over on ANDY'S thread about my barbell set i owned. well i don't really have a good reason for working out other than to keep from GETTING OLD and FEELING OLDER. i used to buy and sell gym equipment when i retired about 10 years ago from selling Real Estate for almost 30 years. with my mental state from the REAL ESTATE CRASH i had to deal with i thought getting in shape was maybe the best thing for me and it might have extended my life.

i started a WEIGHT LOSS thread that i later named "GET HEALTHY so we can play with our tools when we get old" and here's the link:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298568

I sold that BARBELL set long ago and really don't have the space for one, but i just picked up this PARABODY POWER RACK so i can start lifting again while i'm going to do another P90x to try to keep me from getting weaker by the day. all this equipment is in my old office that was one of my kid's bedrooms that is only 9x12.

i love the posts i've seen of your old tools so far and looking forward to seeing others.

cheers

Drives good to have you aboard. I was curious because I have taught fitness training off and on for over forty years. I am 67 years old now and can certainly relate to trying to keep in shape. I have been a karate instructor for 25 years and thanks to that I did not tear any tendons when I sheared off both of my ankle bones three months ago. I have been walking on that leg for five weeks and stood on it with one leg (the bad one) two months after I got off of the operating table for thirty seconds. The doc released me that day. I won't go on about it but my point is, however old you are, keep moving and you will be rewarded. I had to stop training with weights as I kept tearing rotator cuffs doing dumbbell flies. Cheers Bobby

I went to an auction last week that was part of the collection of a friend in the Model A Ford club. I purchased this display cabinet from his vintage store/gas station. Out of two that were up for bids this was the nicest one. It's made of oak about 8 feet long. I would like to use it someday in the garage to display rare items and such or perhaps designate space in the house for a game room. Second option is doubtful as to do away with a place to exercise is probably not prudent considering my recently needed roadside repairs. :dunno:

Hoping to build a table for my die filer starting tomorrow. I have been sharpening hand saws and I decided to glass bead one of my better ones. I kept the bead blast six inches away to get the light pitting without heat. When I got through the saw blade was shaped like a banana!! It started off arrow straight. It would stay that way even if I tried to bend it backwards. I have been experimenting with taking the "bell" out of saw blades in small areas so with nothing to loose I attempted to straighten it out using a ball peen hammer. I got it back to perfectly straight. I penciled a straight line on a 2x4 to see how it cut. I had already cut with it after I sharpened it and I knew it had cut well. I cut two lines, one on the pencil mark and one parallel to it 1/4 inch away. This was done while trying to test for speed also. One cut through the four inch side 23 seconds and dead on. Second cut was also straight and did not break the 1/4 inch wafer. Now I can buy all those flea market saws that are warped for a buck a piece and practice.

IIRC hand saws were hammered to cold work them. The bead blasting must have relaxed internal stresses. Congratulations on getting it straight again! I was afraid you were going to ************ out there!

It is with great pleasure I announce that the Yellow Jackets (they were not honey bees) were eradicated yesterday. I had a man from the bee association over and he loaned me an extra suit with net so I could help tear apart the nest. I got the pleasure of stomping on the first queen with my broken foot. There were six more queens in the nest. I will try and get some pictures tomorrow before I put my house back together.

Got another queen while I was trying to get pictures. Finally got to close up and repair the area. Hope to finish up today if I can get to the top of the ladder.

BB: our YELLOW JACKETS are dead or maybe sleeping this time of year. i had a huge next in an area in the back of my shop i couldn't go near last summer and they are all dead now and they don't come back to the same nest. i've had a few football and bigger size nests i've had to remove and i used to have a BEE KEEPER that would do it for $50 that i gladly paid him to do, but he passed on years ago so it's my duties now and i don't have a bee suit. i'm guessing your yellow jackets were sort of hybernating if you were able to kill the queens so easily?

i hope your injuries heal up quick. did you say you broke or damaged one or two ankles? OUCH!!!

sure if you want to get on the GET HEALTHY thread and share some of your wisdom please do and i'd love to get in better shape so when i'm ANDY'S old age i can do ZUMBA!! here's the link in case you haven't seen the thread i started almost 2 years ago when i needed to lose a few pounds.

Drives just left some info on your health site. If you get the book and want to hear some of my experiences just let me know. I will try to post periodically but to type out some of this information I simply rarely have the time for.

Yellow jackets can be nasty if you try to live in their space!

They seem to be rather persistent about asking you to leave.

Andy and drives I got a bee suit loaned to me and help from a bee guy. Once we got the wall open we doused them with spray and destroyed the nest. The next day I found more eggs and another queen. I donned a heavy jacket with a hood and put on my face shield and a charcoal respirator along with a scarf. The bees typically attack the face as their natural enemy is bear and the nose is the weak spot. They can i.d. the face by the carbon dioxide from breathing. My theory was that the filter would take the CO2 out and also protect some of the face. It worked great. No stings.

It has been brought to my attention that I have purchased many pieces of woodworking equipment and so far no evidence of work being done. Attached at pictures of shavings, cuttings etc. :dunno:
