Bobby, nice block planes.

Building a kayak, now that will be interesting..

Regards

Steve I have done a lot of research on planes lately. Never knew a lot of it working on steel more than wood. I have one more plane I want to get for a well rounded basic set up and that is a larger jack plane.

Progress on the Kayak is going well but slow as I have to dope out my notes and drawing inconsistencies drawn 2 years ago. I will post pictures when enough progress has been made to show beginnings of a structure. I have the keel laid and scalloped and am currently adjusting for the rise of the bow based on my drawings and measurements made from a ninety year old boat that was laying on an old shop floor.

Check out this No. 8 Stanley Jack Plane I picked up for jointing runners on the Kayak and the bench I have planned for the future. It is 24 inches long and has a corrugated bottom. I have never been too impressed with the powered jointers results.

The keel has been laid! Cypress wood was used for density and water resilience. The clamps are still on at the far (stern) end; hard to see in the picture. The keel itself may appear rough but it has been scalloped between rib lines to lighten it and provide some flexibility. Bow and Stern ends are carved out of red oak as it is the closest thing I could match the original with. I suspect it was Sitka Spruce. The splice is right in the center under the cabin floor. I have the keel locked in at the few points where it wants to wander slightly so that when it is braced it will remain arrow straight as shown. This is the first boat for me. I did make one when I was fifteen using the plans out of Popular Mechanics but was limited to tools and materials. Part of the canvas cover I used then was from oil paintings I had painted (free hand) that I was not satisfied with. It look a sight but worked well except for a list to the port side from the keel I made with furring strips! It was no where near 16 feet long.

Looks like a good start. The clueless (me) in the group need lots of pictures and text to keep up with and understand what you are doing. Thanks for posting.

Dwight

Dwight we can learn together. I drew these sketches two years ago and had the conflicting dimensions in my head. Good thing I kept my notes but should have looked at them before I gave myself the migraine I have now. The curved pieces I carved for the cabin arch and width. The other two pieces support the end of the deck center runner below which will be the upright supports which I will show in my next post installed temporarily in order to dope out the right angles, height and clearances. There will be so many structural braces in the completed boat, and the ancient one was partially covered, that I had to guess at some.

These are some pictures of the initial mark up of the upright supports and center structure. Note in the first pic. as others no bracing, glue, nails at this time. All that you see is a jigsaw puzzle snapped together temporarily with pieces that were boards last week. All will be tweaked, marked and taken apart. The bow center runner is just a stick not the final runner.

Jeremy did you make it to Kiawah? The Model A's were parked next to the porta potties. Everyone had to take a careful look as lines going by the cars were slow.

Hey Bobby...I made it down but didn't catch you by your truck. The Model A's were the first group we passed by going in, and then I swung by on the way out but didn't see anybody around the truck. Hopefully I'll catch up with you one day soon!

BB: I have to agree with ANDY cause i've seen new home's blueprints that didn't look that nice. how long is that kyak cause it looks like you are building a yacht? it also looks like you are building it out the end of your new mill's roof?

are you and Ginny planning a little trip on a lake or river some day soon or are you building this just because you can?

It looks good so far and if the boat turns out half as good as the plans i'm betting it will be a showpiece.

good luck!!!

Drives. The kayak is 16 feet long and is being built on a bench that I built just for that purpose. It is between my automotive shop and the wood shop. No water for this baby just a place hanging from the ceiling of whatever room I can get it in. I am building it to challenge my abilities to work with wood and because I believe the original was a beautiful work of art and construction. Being part Native American I am humbled that I had to use drawings at all; even if they were mine! I have had to make corrections to some of the pieces to keep it ramrod straight and am starting to see where area's were tweaked along the way in so doing. I only had the time and access to bring my dimensions to a certain level of detail. Now I am trying to eliminate corrected errors (theirs) without adding any new ones. All this is being done without power tools, except to rip 16 foot boards as I am not a masochist, and without the aid of computer graphics.

Sorry I have not posted for a few days I have been moving stuff. A friend of mine is getting out of the antique business and much has been added to my pile. Bought a highboy entertainment center 1970 vintage yesterday and a blacksmiths hammer (will post pictures of the hammer) I have another heavy desk/layout table to get today and who knows what else. As there was no time left yesterday to start back on the kayak, I worked on my frozen sewing machine and got it freed up. Found that the shaft that drives the needle was bent and after some creative hammer taps got it straight. Everything now moves smooth and quiet. I will post pictures of that also next time I remember to carry the camera to the shop. Ginny's surgery has been on my mind so I am a little more flakey that normal.

Bobby, I trust all is well.

Thanks all! Ginny has to have some pre-cancerous cells removed. She had a breast biopsy as a result of testing I had been pushing her to get for some time recently. I finally resorted to getting one of her friends who has had breast cancer to pounce on her so she went for a checkup. The biopsy showed cancer free but cells that should be removed as they indicated changes other than normal. She will get prep tests today and as the doctor is on vacation and have the operation within the next two weeks. Things look good for her but one of our friends who has been undergoing cancer treatment that involves a new oral medication has made a turn for the worst and is in intensive care. The believe, last I knew, she has had a stroke due to the rise in her blood pressure; possibly caused by the medication. Ginny has taken this extra hard, due to her current situation. She told me the other day that she feels I probably saved her life! I told her I know I have been a pain in the A_ _ but us analytical creative types were by nature.

Thanks drives. Check out the blacksmith's hammer I picked up as part of the stuff my friend was selling out. I also got five pipe wrenches three Rigid and two Craftsman all different sizes. The wrenches were in good shape one dollar a piece.

I had to double brace the cabin frame as initial fit up of the gunwales was enough to force the center rib out of line.

Gunwales were scarfed yesterday and will be fit up for marking and cutting tomorrow if it doesn't rain. Each cross brace is set In a lobe that is scalloped out of the run at each vertical point. One quarter of the gunwale must be carved out between them. I believe this was done for weight and flexibility. This kayak was well thought out and no doubt proven over time in design.

Great work!

And steady progress. You'll be done before you know it!

You'll just have to take a turn around Ft. Sumter when you're done. With pictures!!

Thanks Andy. No water for this baby unless I get desperate for food. I plan to hang it from the ceiling and long for the days when I get too stove up to work. I am building it to be sea worthy though.
