Pictures show construction of post and beam. I should be finished with the wall brick today. I will either have just enough mortar or fall short by one brick. It is a two hour trip into the city. The hardware store in town only orders it when then run out of cement too. What was there last time I looked was hardened in the bag and plenty of cement left.

Bobby, I don't know how you will get any projects done in that environment. I would be so distracted and probably just sit and smile. A really uncomfortable stool and a headband light would help me get some work done. At least Ginny will always know where to look for you first.

Thanks Bob. The only thing that could make it better is if we were sitting at the bench waiting for something to come out of Ginny's oven. Oh wait. That's two? Or maybe a dozen?

BB: I bet it's hard to wake up and figure out which part of your property to spend your day. at the mill cutting a log, going in the shed to work with some hand tools, go in your silo and work with some power tools or hang in the new porch and eat some pie. l think you've made yourself a few nice choices sir.

also as a reminder to me and to those that might just be seeing your new brick shed/shop didn't you make the wood framing without any nails? did you use any glue or just good joinery?

enjoy your day sir!!

thanks drives. The post and beam is about one third mortise and tenon. The rest is three and a half inch deck screws as the many angles would be too time consuming to mess with drilling and cutting in holes etc. I guess I did create a sort of miniature Don Long paradise. I don't get to travel much with having to make a 2000 mi. round trip to see my kids every year. That eats up the extra funds. Escape to the past is the road to peace for me. It will not be long before we fire up the old wood kitchen stove and sit thinking about friends all over the world, having a hot cup of coffee or tea and wishing they were here with us.

BB: you don't need cameras or security or buzzers around your property cause you've planned it that Ginny can see you from inside the house. nice location for your brick shop you are almost done with.

I know you'll show us, but are you planning metal roofing or do tell?

hope the weather is nice in your part of the world now cause i'm already tired of 50's and rain here.

more pics of your progress as you have time to take and post some please.

thanks in advance

drives steel roof emerald green over rough sawn pine twelve inch boards for sound dampening and to complete the feel/look inside. I has been sixty to seventy seven degrees until today. Rain is forecast. Come and see us.

Just as relaxing and you can stay longer without your legs cramping up. PLUS, you can smell the wood. [emoji38]_hitti
Hah, anything to smell the wood!

My Dad and I built a post and beam house in N GA with lumber sawn from the trees we removed. I planed and sanded everything with hand power tools. Dark stain with drywall set back about 2" from the inside face. It came out really nice and no waste of trees. A lot of work but eye catching.

Seems like that's the way it is. Things that are eye catching are always a lot of work. Hum?

Some pictures of the outside roof progress. The first layer is rough sawn pine 12 inch from the first log I milled. Covered with 15# felt paper and purlins made from the same tree scrap. The next pic. is the view looking up from the inside. The table pictures are of the finished product now that my daughter and son in law have put the finish they want on it.

I really like your "brick shed house" It is looking great. It must be a good feeling looking up at the roof and seeing the timbers that were cut and sawed
on location and that the work is all behind you now.

So what is a Don Long Paradise??

Thanks Don. A Don Long Paradise is a place where all you can see is comprised of things I consider beautiful built with pride and conviction by people who are beautiful and, like their creations, that beauty radiates from within.

Lost a fan belt on the saw mill power plant just as I was finishing a cut yesterday. Working on the mill today as the roof is on the shed. I will get pictures up as soon as the mill is back on line and the pecan log completely cut..

BB: your roof looks amazing and hard to believe that material was sitting around for a bit cause it looks shiny and new.

so tell us did you have enough mortar for the last bricks or did you end up making some of BB's home mix to get r done?

I can see you filling that brick shed up with cool old tools and spending some quiet times out there making whatever you like.

cheers

Thanks drives. Ginny washed the roof panels several times but mostly they were kept inside. Lowes did not run out of mortar thankfully but the local hardware store did. I still have some and hope to brick in the door sill today.

Door is finished and windows painted. I built the door from scrap with the exception of three pieces of bead board I had to buy. I used the backside plus what was left over from the porch. The darker of the two is old growth cypress I got from a friend who pulls it out of the water many years after it has fallen in. The entire door including the trim is cypress as it is not affected by bugs and water. It will not be painted. It is an inch and one half thick sporting a handle and a dead bolt lock.

You going to put cypress shutters on those windows?

Thanks drives. I have little else to do but want to see if I can get more cypress rough sawn as I want to put a removable floor in. Easier on the feet and keeps the dampness down. Stay safe and dry.

Got a call yesterday from friend who "had some cypress." It turned out to be cedar and lots of it. Should be work intensive but it is red and my stock of red is small. Have to clean out the sawdust pit to save the dust; it smells so good. Two dead batteries in the Mustangs are keeping me from the big fall show; rats.

Thanks Jim and Redwolf. This is the step/sill I added to finish it off. I also added a cedar step plate but not in the picture. I am on to designing and building an awning out of waste in order to stop the rain from ruining my window sill and sash.

BB: it looks like you found more mortar and your little shed just keeps getting PURDIER and PURDIER every picture you take of it.

i'm guessing it might be fairly cool inside there when those hot summer days of yours arrive?

I bet you and Ginny just share some quiet time in your sitting room looking at this cool shed.

enjoy you day doing whatever you choose to do.

Thanks drives. You are right on the money. Ginny and I have breakfast on the porch looking out at the labor and we just finished. What a blessing it is to have so many friends.

This is the dump trailer load of red (aromatic) cedar I just purchased from a friend who has a tree business. Some of it is quite large but cedar has a lot of waste. I will be saving ALL of the sawdust from this milling.
