I forget do you buy a pre mix mortar and just ad water or do you buy cement, sand and lime and mix your own?

the last brickwork I did I think I was mixing one part cement with 2 parts sand (it was old unused sandbag flood prevention sand so not very fine) and it seems to be holding up ok.

I could certainly buy (or maybe I still have some lime around here) and add it if you think it would add some strength or what does lime add to the mix?

Well I suppose if we cook out we should move them. My job to build. Wife's job to keep flowers alive.

I use the premix. The concrete adds the strength. Concrete does not stick to itself. Mortar will stick to concrete. Mortar comes in different strengths. (S) is the strongest available at the big box store. All have their strengths and weaknesses.

Yep I would never eliminate the concrete but I did eliminate the lime. Next project I do I’ll add lime to my mortar mix with finer sand and see how I like it.

Some flowers I bought the wife for our 25th anniversary. Fire pit pictures tomorrow. The flower is Lantana.

This was designed to double as a flower display when not in use as a fire pit. It was also designed with food in mind; that to be developed as the need/desire arises. It was not designed to be in keeping with current trends but will serve that purpose also. It is an alternative to not having a fireplace chimney obstructing the view of all the flowers Ginny had already so lovingly cared for.

Thanks drives. Time to pick blackberries or raspberries. Lots of busy work on schedule. Do have some new old tools to try though.

Bird feeder/bath will be painted same green as bridge. Top section with casting of birds is aluminum so that may be blasted. It is removable as are the flower pots.

all your projects are pretty well thought out and just curious if you do build a fire do you have a grate to put in your fire pit so you can get airflow or were you just planning on having the fire burn on the ground/bricks?

pretty cool cast iron piece you've got there.

so when it it's 90+ in your part of the world does it get muggy too or is it a DRY HEAT.

Bridge is finished. Pictures are back several pages. If you mean how is it working out the fish and the wife love it. Feels much less like a pool and more like a pond. The big turtle spends most of her time under it out of the sun. I built a brick alligator yesterday but am not satisfied with it yet. Don't know if I will mortar it together or stack it back on the pile. Looks good from close but from a distance (side view) it just looks like a pile of brick. Tried to tell the wife alligators are that way in the wild for a reason but no sale. She probably would rather have a fairy. Like to see what that would look like.

Thanks Drives. Ginny loves the kitchen and I get plenty of baked goods for my efforts. I have a way of feeding a camp fire that draws its own air so no grate. I am planning to build a grill and eventually a spit though. They will both be drop in so they do no sit and rust when not in use. Muggy is all we get here most of the time when it's hot. However, rain is not forthcoming like it used to be so much of the humidity depends on how much we have had.

Best part how true. Don't feel bad I go for a tool or my glasses and then return without anything only to go back again across the street. The neighbors must think I am obsessive compulsive; or maybe I keep a bottle in the shop???

I suppose you can add up all your workshop space? here's what I saw on another member's thread that was asking the same question. magically mine showed up maybe cause I put the size of my half of our 2 car garage in the title of my DIY thread.

"Go to the first page of your thread. At the top right there is a drop down menu with an arrow pointing down. When you click on it is says edit thread. Click that and it allows you to change the title of you thread and it also has an arrow you click to edit the size."

how's the weather cause I'm guessing it's been heating up again in your part of the world? i'm guessing it's maybe time to build a few wood benches to put around your new brick fire pit? cut any wood on your mill lately?

Thanks drives. I will try that first chance I get. It is getting hotter. I picked up three more benches that all match but do not match those I did already. These are a more plain. Three big logs waiting for cooler weather.

Still here. Busy picking blackberries, cleaning up the rest of the shed from last fall, entertaining guests, going to picnics etc., cutting grass, lots and lots of grass. No time even to try out some of my new planes except on a few scraps. Hope all are well. Bobby

OK so I have built something. Just haven't had the time to take pictures. This is my design made with copper scraps left over from the hood in the kitchen. Pull the front brass pin. Turn it upside down angle it and pour in your seed. Cages on the sides are for suet. Salvaged from the feeder I ran over with the tractor. Opps.

since you didn't post any pics of it open or with your bird eating out of it I thought you built a very nice bread or baked goods holder. WOW!! I bet the bird likes it. you sure seem to like and know how to treat your little critters good.

I do love all living things. It saddens me to see a life end. Even when it must be so, in circumstances such as contagious diseases being a danger to others. Ginny and I sat to eat lunch yesterday by the pond. We had a turtle or two, followed by a school of fish, birds looking into the feeder then looking over their shoulder at us with a what's up expression on their face as it was temporarily empty, bees feeding on the flowers around us, a dog waiting for us to drop something, and us to feed. Only the alligator was content to lay there and watch and wait. Of course, he is made of brick and I built him facing away from the table.
