There isn't a wanna be railroader anywhere that knows more about model trains than the railfans, sadly they think it's the same in real life practice. On the rare occasion one gets hired they usually go up in flames quickly, but they do build some impressive scale railroads.
An old head engineer taught me long ago that the first question to ask a new guy was "how big is your train set?" takes them out of the closet quickly..lol
Actually, a friend of mine has some LGB trains running around his tropical fish store. They sell them for folks to use with ponds and landscaping. In the case, they are hanging from the ceiling with brackets made just for that. If I can get any info, I'll pass it along.
I haven't subscribed in many years, but there was a magazine called "garden Railways" that was very full of advertising for all sorts of things including the specialized brackets they sold for that. Not that you'd need them. It's just a shelf after all. When you put in the first turn you'll figure out all the geometrical problems.
Probably find more O gauge or smaller on walls. If you don't have a specific garden gauge love or already have the equipment I'd go smaller. But yes, people have done it. Works fine. I'm a lionel guy, so I don't have any specific suggestions. Good luck and have fun!
I recently put an elevated Lego track in my sons room. The ClosetMaid wire racking that Lowes sells worked great. They make corner pieces that took the 90 degree Lego track perfectly. And it has a lighter look to it being see through as opposed to using plywood etc. Costs a bit though.
Classic Toy Trains magazine offers information about toy trains operating and collecting, toy train product news and reviews, toy train layout tips, toy train layout designs and track plans, and more. We feature Lionel, American Flyer, MTH, Atlas O, Williams Trains, K-Line, Weaver Models, and more.
I put a model train track around on the walls near the basement ceiling. In the basement. The train is a flyer type(?)Then I put a baby power line alongside of it too.The tracks are 3(O gauge)?
I have a O scale train shelf going around the perimeter in my home office. Would be cool in the garage, however there would be too many chances for the models to get messed up.
I got bit by the O scale bug last year. Had grandiose plans to build something outside in the yard since my workshop had low ceilings. I even bought something like 12 pieces of 40" track sections off eBay.
So far this is all I built....
And since then we have moved and now the wine barrel TV stand is on an unprotected screen porch. I'm afraid to set it back up for now. And I'm still so busy setting up my "micro garage" that I haven't even had time to think about a train layout at the new place yet. Buy hey, I still have all that track.
This is really cool. Thanks for the link. Maybe someday when I finish by basement office in the new house, I'll order or make something similar to this and finally get Grandpa's LGB trains out of storage.
I don't know anything about model trains but have seen a couple that did what you are proposing. One was the inside portion of a large nursery w. one room maybe 25x35. Train ran around the walls at maybe 7ft and across a table on one of the 25 walls. We went there each Christmas to see the latest addition to the trains. Saw another similar in an old style hardware store. So I am here just to say I hope you go with your idea because it will be a lot of fun.
