What an awesome gift and gesture of your friend gifting that model to you!
I´m now very curious where you will be showing it on display?

Cheers,

Anders

Yes, we’ve been friends a long time, and we organized and ran the local sports car club together for a over three decades, Anders. He has my Elan’s original frame in his garage. He made two of these models, one for his son, who also has an Elan, and this one. He says his fingers lost all feeling from all the filing. He is an engineer and now about 74 years old.

I'll put it on my office desk, so I can see it and pick it up often. The frame is jusr resting on stands.

Andres, that´s an EXCELLENT placement for such an art piece. I bet it brings a smile to your face as soon as you lay eyes on that beauty.

I though of you the other day when I was at one of the local watch-boutiques here in Stockholm to see the newest Halda timepiece! :)

Andy, your friend deserves kudos from all who see his art craft! If there exists an international Lotus owners' publication, you might consider sending them a note and some photographs of this gift.

Perhaps now you can give your friend a break from your "ten years of cracking the whip"! lol

Of course, you could also take up the whip again when it comes time to 'request' he create the body to go along with the frame. LOL

I LOVE the TC, I'd really like to have one, but I'd have to use a shoe horn to get in it.

Re: Acoustics

The absence of things makes the house easy to maintain and has a calming effect, noticed immediately by most friends. The difficulty, as you noted, is keeping stuff from creeping in. It’s not easy.

Good luck again!

Andy

My wife and I are reading "the joy of less a minimalist living guide" by Francine Jay. There is a lot to be said for living with less. We're slowly working to "less".

Beautiful space!

Thank you, all. I’ll tell my friend, who will be glad to know his work is appreciated. His name, for posterity, is Gonzalo “Nene” SyQuia. A long time ago, he showed me how to use a hacksaw so the blade doesn’t break prematurely. He learned that from school, he said. He studied engineering at a trade school down the river from Harvard, as he likes to say.

When he retired, he began to build full-sized replicas, mostly for his own enjoyment, but sold quite a few under the name “Michel” – MG TCs, MG TFs, Lotus 7s, the mandatory Cobra, Porsche Speedsters and Spyders. Although he employed several workers eventually, he did a great deal of work himself, such as the windshield posts for the TCs.

Here is his replica Porsche Speedster, next to my MG TC:

And one of his Porsche Spyder replicas at a hillclimb. It is very accurate.

I think he found the 1:8 scale model more difficult!

Best,

Andy

PS: I am glad the garage encourages you to look at a minimalist style, 65SpeedBowtie. Yes, the TC is a tight fit, adioRon. It seems people were smaller then! But it is a delightful little car.

Andres, you have now for sure fired up my appetite for some more of "Nene´s" exquisite work.
If it would be possible I would very much like to see some pictures of the cars as well as perhaps a little about how he went about to manufacture them.

Is there any www for your "club" perhaps there one can read about this truly great craftsman!?

Regards,

Anders

1:8 Lotus Elan Frame

Many thanks, Anders. He is indeed a very talented man. Here is another photograph - design by Colin Chapman, construction by Nene SyQuia.

I have the strengthened version of the frame in my Elan now, which mimics the modifications nade to the mid-1960 Elan racer, the 26R. It is a bit stiffer and more robust, but in sheer elegance it is no match for the original design.

I have not posted in a while, as there is little to add to my minimalist garage. But I thought this one was worth preserving for posterity, at least while this forum exists.

Best,
Andy

What an amazing read this thread has been, thankyou for sharing!

On a sidenote, I'm extremely jealous of your lotus', and that scale chassis is sublime, you have a real friend there with that gift.

Andres, there is no need to have done anything TO the garage to post, as long as you do stuff IN the garage I would be VERY happy to see pics. As you know I´m a keen enthusiast of those gems resting there. :)

Thanks very much, Jordan, Anders, Akdiesel, Macbergeon. I don’t want to bore everyone, Anders! And, Akdiesel, yes, that is true; I know the true gift is the friendship.

My best regards,

I've had a rest from GJ lately. Just peeping today, and must say your home is still fascinating, and I'm happy to see your thread is still living it's life.

A slow, rainy morning gave me chance to look over your entire thread. Very refreshing garage and home!! Your pictures are a pleasure to look at.

One question......the chairs in the garage....the black leather ones with the chrome framework surrounding them......what do you call them? Where do you find them? While looking at your thread and picking some music from youtube, I saw the same style chair in a Pitbull music video!

even without seeing the picture I was sure this was a Corbusier chair.

It looks like it's a "LC2 Petit Modele Armchair"
478c4c5dc3b79cb3_corbusier.xlarge.jpg

They are from 1928 and cost (real one) $3,500-4,000

You can get them at many places just google it.

The cheaper/copied version called "Le Corbusier Petite Chair" is about $550

they are made by Cassina but today I think you can get any level of copies from eveyr price point (China to Cassina)

Many thanks, Chevy EFI. Scott. Beach Boy. I'm glad you enjoyed the garage.

Yes, those are Le Corbusier chairs, quite an old design but still very nice. When we had to keep one of our dogs in a pen while he recovered from a knee operation, we made a stainless-steel pen that mimicked the LC chair.

Best,

Andy

Nice to see this thread featured on the main GJ page. Ryan makes the point that it's a truly amazing garage and shop space. But it's also worth pointing out that the owner is just as impressive, interesting and extremely helpful and gracious as well.

i also saw an LC4 in there somewhere. :) I modeled both of those chairs in a design class and used them in every 3d building that i did. I love those chairs and someday hope to have a nice enough place to justify having a nice chairs like those.

The house and the garage are beautiful.

I realized that i haven't actually posted in your amazing thread. This doesn't mean that i haven't spent hours reading through and looking at the amazing photos that you have shared. Very simple, clean and amazing all at the same time. Well done, easily one of the coolest threads i've ever stumbled upon.

Portland - the cool one.
This was the last job we needed to do, so, subject to the caveat that a garage is never finished, the garage is for now complete.

Andy

This, even more than your exquisite taste and relentless devotion to minimalism, is what I find most inspiring. To know that some day the garage could be "finished" - I thank you for the inspiration Andy!

Many thanks, Sub0007, Singletrack, Dubber, all. I am happy you enjoyed the garage. Thanks especially, Jack, Dennis, Gregor, for the kind words.

I’ve just retired from my firm of 40 years and am hoping, after the dust settles (so many papers and so much stuff!), to spend more time with the cars. The Lotus needs to be sorted for street use, so I am looking forward to that.

Best personal regards,

Andy

Congrats on retirement complete with garage and awesome cars! I'm off work for a couple of weeks; the longest that I've ever been away from a job. It's caused me to consider a time in life where I could retire and just work on enjoying my time. Enjoy yourself!

This has been one of the most enlightening threads I've ever read, on any forum. Thank you for taking the time to start this thread and for keeping it updated as it/time progresses.

You have, as many here concur, two of the most lust-worthy cars in existence (the Dino and the Stratos). There aren't many rally fans here in the U.S. so many here probably don't know the history behind the Stratos, but those who do are drooling (myself included). To think that there was a time when they were "inexpensive" is mind boggling. Unfortunately, that time was when I was probably six to ten years old and lusting after Testarossas, Countachs, and 959s. Even more unfortunate is that these cars will surely be out of my price range indefinitely. Thank you for posting the pictures of both cars. Any additional pictures of either car, or anything else you happen to feel is worthy, would be very welcome.

It is really a big dream of a garage, collection and a very fine house owned by a very, very kind owner.

B.t.w. my father retired 5 years ago and is more than ever into his Alfa's and Volvo's (his agenda is more filled with hobby stuf now than it was ever with business while he was still working, and he worked at least 60 hours a week..). So enjoy it!
