Modern Mountain in the prairies

Wife and I building our ‘forever’ house. We’re on a 20 acre parcel that’s part of a larger 175 acre tract. The house will be oriented to face West, turned ever so slightly to the South, looking over a river bottom.

I’m a car guy and was adamant about having a ‘man cave’. It turned into a man cave living space with an attached 24x24 garage flanking the house on the North end. These two spaces will be accessed by a 12’ 4 pane sliding door. The idea is that you could potentially open the slider and utilize the entire space. This obviously means the garage will more replicate a finished living space vs. an actual garage. Should be interesting to see it all come together.

Thanks! Really looking forward to how it all comes together. We had a brutal winter which really set things back, but they’re really flying now. Hoping to have her closed in by middle of summer.

Starting to close in man cave and garage on North side of house. I also included a picture of the stone caps with steel knife plates. These will each get two Timbers that will help secure the overhang over the front of the garage.

The last picture is from the center of the garage looking West into the man cave living area. Again, a four-pane slider will separate these two spaces. The idea here is that we could potentially pull cars out, open slider, and have an extended living space.

I’ve tried to attach a few screenshots of the 3D BIMx model, showing the man cave garage. The third picture is looking towards the man cave lounge. Keep in mind that the interior garage door is no more, and this will be a four-pane sliding glass door instead. We felt that an interior garage door would make for drafty winter days and the likelihood that critters could easily make their way in.

Things continue to progress. Douglas fir decking going in now. Lots of these shots are showing much of the man cave and how it incorporates with the actual garage. A few of the first pics show from the exterior how it marries with the 2-car.

Here are a couple from the back of the house looking towards the man cave/garage. Hopefully this helps with the orientation of the house. Those concrete pillars will be wrapped in stone. That will be a back patio off the end of the house. Should be a great place to play cards and smoke a stogie!

Yes I know, lots of bracing, particularly in the garage. The main reason for this is because I asked later on that the ceiling be vaulted so I could potentially put in a lift. The ceiling clearance was too low before.

They accommodated, but now have to reinforce the garage door wall because structurally it's not sound as is.

It's a fair question. There is a 3-car 'day to day' garage on the South side of the house. This two-car will be for just the fun cars!

I would have loved to build a larger fun garage, but the dollars were taken for the main home! Good thing about the land is there's plenty of room to add additional spaces some day.

Memorial Day update. Progress really coming along...amazing what they’ve done in just 30 days.

Support beams out and so the dimensions and overall feeling of the space is starting to become more understood.

A few pics of the trench drain that’ll eventually go into the garage floor. It’ll run between the two stalls, down the middle of the garage.

Things progressing, but a little slow now as they begin the ‘rough-in’ stages.

Doors in; stone on; fireplace set. Things continue progressing.

Doing Nichiha for a portion of the exterior material. It’s a commercial product but applicable on homes as well. Zero maintenance which was the goal. I think it’ll look nice once complete.
