What are some tool modifications which you have had to make to get jobs done? I know that cutting wrenches to a shorter length is a common one.

Take an off-set box wrench or the appropriate size for you water pump's fan bolts. weld a small washer to one side of the box. This will keep the bolt head from coming through the box when you're taking the bolt out.

i had to grind the S-K 1 5/8 deep impact socket 3/4dr because the rear differential pinion nut is 1 5/8 because it have seal problem to cause it is leaking. the S-K 1 5/8 impact deep socket is too thick to fit. so i had to grinding it down to be thin but not too thin. it is fit on nut good. but i am concern if i broke it then it is void warranty because i modified this S-K socket.

Thanks Brad! Thats a great idea... That'd probably work in some other areas too where you end up with that pesky nut on a long shaft but no room/ability to use a deep socket.

I did something similar to that. I put a craftsman impact on a lathe and milled it down. Glad to hear I'm not the only crazy one out there. The guys were calling me all kinds of funny things that day!

But it worked, right? As long as it works and gets the job done...

when i had too thick impact from S-K at wholesale tool that sold me for 22 dollars. i decided to try see if it will fit in but it is too thick to fit. i told other techs that i am going to grinding it but they said why and you are crazy to damage the good tool. i told them that i cant have good tool if i cant use it because it will not fit or will not fix for me... so i have to grinding it to be slim on wall thick. then i got it fit and work really good....... NOW i am only tech who have that size tools in shop while other techs dont have it.....
