Modifying a Baldor 500 for general use

I came into possession of a Baldor 500, I want to convert it into a general use bench grinder -- is there an easy way to do that? It's in great shape though missing a few parts (e.g, collection trays) and runs great in both directions, I'd like to keep it if it can be converted to more general grinding and buffing duties.

thanks

Welcome to the forum!

For best results you need to post images. We all love images and lots of them.

CP: I agree with DaveF that a lot of pictures of your grinder would help. there are a lot of Baldor grinder threads where the owner shows how to take a grinder down to ground zero almost and restore as needed and putting them back together. do a search for some and we are happy to help some on your new thread, but need more information and definitely pictures.

are you able to post pictures and if you need any help just ask because new members are needed especially ones that know what a Baldor grinder is.

by the way are you saying that your Baldor has a forward and reverse?

welcome to our forum

That tool grinder lists for almost $1500 new. Sell it and buy a nice old 1hp grinder that fits you needs better. Carbide tool grinders fetch good money used.

Where are you located?
Perhaps a member here will trade with you so you can get what you want

I don't have a picture but what I have can be seen at this link: http://www.baldor.com/products/deta...Buffers&family=Grinders|vw_GrindBuff_Grinders it's missing the bottom troughs and the top liquid reservoir.

I've considered selling it but I like the forward and reverse feature and thought maybe there might be an easy mod for it.

I live in Manassas VA and am open to trading for a bench grinder/buffer ....

My first thought was to sell it too. I would imagine that the missing parts could be acquired fairly easily, perhaps directly from Baldor.

The foreword and reverse really done help at all unless you are doing sharpening. In a regular grinder you want the rotation down so you have stuff getting thrown in your face.

Either use it as is with only changing the wheels ( if need be ) or trade it away for what you want.

I have a couple baldor grinders, so I can do some trading with you but we would have to ship back and forth

I have one of these that had a cracked housing when I got it. I found the part I needed from someone on another board who had one that had been underwater in Katrina. Found the water cup at Grizzly, got most of the parts for the miter gauge there too. He may have those trays, I can try to dig up his contact info if you're interested.

Bob - Thanks but I think the shipping is going to be prohibitive ... I'll try Craigslist and see what develops

454 - Thanks I'm not really interested in restoring it to original as I have no need for a carbide tool grinder.
