Hello there.

As I like getting opinions before I start, I come to you with this project.

Most of you are aware how an ultrasonic tank is made:
a 2mm stainless steel tub bonded to 1mm stainless steel sheet panel.

One unit I have is pretty basic (pictures for reference, not my actual unit, but very similar) and I need to make at least one hole so I can run an inline filtration system.

As I cannot weld to the tub, and using epoxy is not a good option either, I will use a threaded drain plug.

As for the 1mm exterior panel, I plan to have something like an access panel, for the above mentioned drain plug. Obviously the hole will be larger, so I think a riveted backing plate will reinforce the structure.

How can I cut the exterior panel? What about the tub? Is drilling a viable option?

I don't see any problem with your plan but you'll need to be very careful that you don't damage the transducers or their mount to the tank's bottom. The only concern would be changing the US resonance of the tank with the hole/fitting.

For drilling stainless, drill slow, use lots of coolant, start with a small pilot hole and increase the diameter in gradual steps. Cobalt drills work best but nice sharp HSS bits will work just fine.

Thanks!

I don`t have any idea on what to use on the exterior panels. Using a dremel is a bit messy and time consuming.

First of all, I do not have a welding machine or skills. Space constraints, it is heavy, it might damage the transducers.

I'd use a Dremel and one of their larger diameter cutting wheels or maybe a die grinder w/small wheel.

But why can't you remove the bottom access cover? There should be plenty of room to do your "plumbing" and then make a small exit hole for the drain:
