I would check your connections to make sure they are correct, i am not familiar with this unit, however most that I have dealt with the thermostat would not control the fan, it would control the gas valve and a snap disk would then control the fan. Do you have a model #?

My modine did the same thing. I changed out the control unit and it works good now. I'm not sure if your is the same but mine would kick the exhaust fan on but would not light. It's like it would not allow the gas valve to turn on. If you need I'll get the number off mine and then compare them.

Normally gas valves that use a pilot also use a thermocouple. Anytime I had a thermocouple die the pilot would not stay lit. They don't cost much

Sounds like the gas valve is leaking. You are in a salt air environment == do you think it ever got wet?

Best to get the model and manual for the unit so you understand operation. Then find someone to fix it .. you can't rebuild the valves. They come as a unit.

Normally the gas smell with the pilot operating would indicate an empty or near empty tank. So if that is not the case I would check the regulator. Do you have a way to check the gas pressure at the valve, you would need or need to know someone with a manometer.

TOO LITTLE INFORMATION !! . . . . . . . . has heater EVER ran before ??

Is it Natural Gas or Propane/LPG ??? What is AGE and MODEL # of heater ???

Appears you are posting with phone but yet have not posted up any PICTURES of the heater, pilot light, identification panel, etc ?? Surely your phone has camera capability that you could Text-Pic to yourself as a file to your own email.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, do you know where SHUT-OFF is located so that gas supply is shut off ??? You're saying you keep having bad smelling garage which implies that heater is continuing to leak fuel . . . .
. . . . . . . . . DANGER, DANGER, DANGER . . . . .
. . . . you just might go BOOM if there has built up large quantity of leaking fumes !! :scared:

Let's SEE what you're talking about !! Post up bunch of pics so you have chance of getting proper advice from GJer's.

:needpics:

I will post up pics when I get back i'm down in Daytona for bike week.

the heater did run the guy showed it to me while it was still hooked up in his garage.
first time I lit had to bleed the gas line out then got the pilot to light and stay on now that does not work

after it lit origianally it would not light the flames heard a click blower came on had 24 volts to the gas valve but no flame.
