I've been looking at people's installations and I am concerned. I know these manufacturers have installation instructions but what about local codes? For Instance, my Porpane company won't connect the tank unless there is a fireomatic, a gas boiler switch and wiring ran through romex or rigid.

Now i'm not sure how many people have pulled permits for installation but even a $200 permit and $200 of safety equipment can be used in defense if there is ever a fire for insurance purposes. Just my 2 cents...

What is a fireomatic and a gas boiler switch? I've installed a couple of these heaters (according to local code ). Codes can vary greatly by locality. I have never heard of those two things and neither are required by the manufacturer or my local codes.

fireomatic thermal switch in case of fire..Mounted very close to unit which cuts electricity in the event of a fire.

boiler switch is a normal 120 switch with a red coverplate in case of, once again, an emergency. I guess my code requires a red plate; reason being, the mind thinks red as danger... I don't know...

Thanks for the info. I've been a firefighter for almost 30 years and have never seen or heard of the fireomatic thermal switch. The only code requirement in Wa. state is that an electrical cut-off switch (no particular color) needs to be within approx. 6' of the unit so the unit can be de-energized for service. Like I said, different localities vary greatly. In Ca. you are required to have a device that turns off the gas in the event of an earthquake. I doubt you can even find one in my state.

Using Romex or pulling wire through conduit and the on/off switch is pretty standard stuff....the Fire-o-Matic is new to me....guess you'll have to do whatever the propane co sez if you want heat...
