noticed a smell of propane while i was outside and checked on the heater. it would fire when i turned up the thermostat so i shut the power and turned it back on to fire it up. it tried to fire 4 times then shut down. checked the gas to see if it was leaking and it wasn't. bottle was covered in drifted snow so i cleaned it to check for leaks. any ideas where i should start to look?

Does your heater have diagnostic lights? They might give you some indication of the problem.

Make sure the vent isn't covered or filled with snow or ice.

Try rubbing some steel wool on the flame sensor rod. Did this to neighbors, it builds a light film on it.
