My buddy just had what looks like a modine heater installed in his garage.
he hired it out , there is no name on the box, nothing on the heater . it looks, sounds and acts identical to the Modine I have in my shop. The installer didn't leave any paperwork with it .
could it be a Knock off perhaps? or am I overthinking this?

I was thinking the same thing as Done That. There should be a sticker somewhere on the unit indicating its listing with testing agencies. If not, I would go back to the installer with questions about its safety. I see nothing wrong with questioning it if it is not labeled and if no paperwork can be provided. If it were inspected by the authority having jurisdiction and they knew how to do their job, they would inspect it to verify that it was installed in accordance with its listing and manufacturer's instructions. There is no way to verify that without the listing and associated paperwork.

I asked my buddy bout the heater, he said " I dunno, this guy is good and he was cheap, that's all I know"
I asked him on brand and he had no clue . I don't want to start jumping on ladders and tearing off panels , I tried to find out info but he didn't seem interested.

What I do know is my Modine had a factory installed decal on the face , the box had Modine on it etc. that was 3 or 4 yrs ago tho, things may have changed.

Maybe it isn't a knockoff. I know that my boiler is a "Williams", but is identical to the Weil McClain CGA-Gold except in paint color. The same factory sent out both, and left it up to the installer to put on the brand label. I don't know if Modine does the same, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

I talked to my buddy about it, he was satisfied that it was cheap & works .
This thread is nothing more than to satisfy my curiosity, but, I'm not about to start climbing on ladders, taking panels off etc .
He had no idea of the brand or anything else.

Seems a little strange to not be concerned with that sort of thing. I'd want to make sure there are parts available if something goes wrong....and some sort of warranty. Just worrying about the price seems a little foolish to me.

so I was out in his garage tonight, and had a bit of a closer look. '
still don't see any brand decals on it, but what I did notice... there's no drip leg and no valve on the gas supply, . so, I'm not sure how much of a gas guy his installer is .

Maybe the heater fell off the back of a truck and the guy moonlight installed it? Hence the low cost, no documents, no data plate, no questions...
