Are the Modine how dawg heaters worth the extra $200+ dollars? I can get the big Maxx at Menards on sale for $354 plus 11% rebate. Seems like a no brainer.

The big maxx heaters from Menards require a venting kit that is as expensive as the heater.
I just installed the 80,000 btu one last winter in my garage. The Heater, vent kit and thermostat was $859. $400 for the heater, $425 for the vent kit, and $25 for the thermostat.
So look at the venting requirements and figure that into your total cost.

the $425 vent kit was probably a horizontal kit?
the vertical runs are simple B vent & would basically cost the same for each unit. a Modine horizontal kit is basically the same price.
I was told by 2 gas guys that Modine repair parts are easier to get than big max, but in the end, I suspect they both use generic control parts

The stainless horizontal venting is required for any brand shop heater if horizontally venting. It can be found online for $300. Others have used cheaper and shorter hot water heater vent kits and maybe some extra pipe.

I got the Mr Heater 50k for $258 on sale and the vent kit for $300. It works great. If money was no object, I would buy the intake/vent unit that I think modine makes. But I don’t need it and the saved $500 buys more tools.

Because that is required by code. But if you don’t care about code, you can use B vent. Until the code changed, it was allowed.

My Modine is excellent. My thermostat took a dump and let it run full blast one night, came in to a 90 degree garage at 36 degree outside temps.

It came with the garage however :)

I will say if I have the doors open it doesn’t help much but better than nothing.
