Hello, I was wondering if I could get any recommendations on which diagnostic tool people thought would be best for me, I'm a sole trader just set up a repair service in the uk. I'm thinking of branching out doin some diagnostics and fault finding and need a machine that it upto the task, I've had my eye on the modis but it's well out of my price range and a solus has just come available for pretty good money 2nd hand, it's upto date on the software updates and seems like it would do everythin I need, however when I've spoke to my snap-on dealer although he didn't dismiss it straight away he really thinks that the modis is the way to go, now I don't know whether he is trying to bump up his sales by getting me into one of these machines or he really doesn't think much of the solus. I've never used a scope before so I don't really know what I'm missing, the sure track sounds like a good thing to have so does the guided component testing but ile really unsure.

Does anyone have any advice?

Cheers

Really the difference between the two is the scope. So if you need an oscilloscope than go Modis, if not then Solus. Or if you already or have plans to have a separate scope then you wouldn't need the Modis. I am pretty sure the scan tool features of the solus is the same as modis. Both run on the same OS so imagine it's even the same computer code.

I recently bought a Solus Edge used off of craigslist and man the thing is fast. I am just a DIYer and splurged to buy a good scan tool and it's amazing how much a solus edge can see vs. more basic OBD2 scan tools.

It's the scope (which I've never used or really needed) and the guided component testing which the snap on rep is really pushing, he keeps sayin it takes all the guess work out of the job. I understand that its probably really useful but as I've never used it am I just missing out and is it worth the extra outlay, or will I just use it like the solus edge and never actually get the best features out of the machine.

The software is exactly identical between the two.

The guided component tester tells you the theory of op for the component, where it is, best place to probe and when it comes to hooking it up, the probes are color-coded to which port on the tool they go to!

If you are hanging a shingle out claiming to be doing diagnostics, you really need the component tester to determine if the component is truly defective otherwise, you're not doing diagnostics but swapnostics.

Buy the Modis Ultra!

I'm not to the point of using scopes but the master tech in my shop has been complaining for years about not having one. We diag properly & turn away a lot of big jobs because we can't verify the problem. We just got the modis yesterday so now we have both & he said to use the solus unless we need the scope.

The problem I have is because I'm on my own just starting out its quite daunting having to buy expensive components on a whim? If I'm not 100% sure I only have two choices, turn a customer away or take a gamble. Having the safety net of component testing takes all the guess work out of issues, saves time stripping jobs down and building them back up to find the problem still persists.

I think I know deep down that I should get a modus but for about £1000 more than the solus I just wanted to know if it was worth the initial outlay.
