Modular tile floor: how to handle step-up?

In the planning process for the garage, and have decided to go with modular tiles. Polymer or PVC yet to be determined. My question is this:

Along the back of the garage is a 5-foot deep raised level. It's 6" above the garage floor proper. On this level, and against the back wall, is where the cabinets and refrigerator will be installed. I'd like to continue the modular tiles on this raised portion, but am not sure how to treat the exposed concrete and tile edge. Thought about vinyl base molding, but I'm not sure how durable the top edge will be with foot traffic.

Any suggestions?

Hi 62thunderbird. I have almost the same situation with a 3" step up. I was going to use a trimed down vinyl base molding like you and then get a small fiberglass or aluminum angle to protect the edge. Thinking of going with tuff-seal tiles, but have to beat myself on the head a little more to justify the cost. Good Luck

I'm in the same situation and trying to decide what to do. Do you ever do this? I'd love to see pictures of how it came out.

There are a lot of options that work real well. Many of the tile companies can give you PMS color numbers. You can take these to a hardware or flooring store and buy a cove base that matches.

Another idea is to use something different like Diamond Life Base Molding around the riser.

What we did is we took the tile to True Value and had them match the paint to the tile. We then took ¼” exterior grade plywood and painted it and applied a ‘floor quality’ urethane over top of the paint. It looks awesome and was VERY easy to do. We considered using 1x6 pine and doing the same for trim around the floor and as a crown of sorts but we went with the diamond life trim instead.
