Modular tool storage suggestions

Hey y’all,
I’m a sucker for a good way to store my tools (construction worker and shade tree mech) and I’m really tempted by the DeWalt Tstak and Craftsman Versastack (cross compatible) to use to keep stuff organized on site and on the way, in the back of my Jeep. Can anyone who uses these vouch for them? The price point is good for my budget, just debating whether I need them or not or if they’re that much of an improvement over the 5 gallon buckets and bags I use now.
Thanks!
-Will

I have 6 of the 2 drawer Versastak parts organizers. They sit on a shelf and hold all my hardware, old drill bits and other miscellaneous ****. Great for on a shelf but wouldn’t want to use them mobile. That’s the only thing I have from that line and will buy a couple more down the road. Not much more that I can say. If everything else from the line is constructed the same as the shell for these they will be tough enough to slide around in your care.

I use them for my tools at work (Elevator Modernization Mechanic) so they get moved around alot. They are pretty good as long as you understand what you are working with. I've got 7 or 8 of the drawer units on the dollie that I use for hand tools and 6 or so large boxes I use for everything else, and a couple more large, small, and open totes that are for specialized jobs or tools. Tough-System or Milwaukee Packouts are definitely better made but the prices are ridiculous.057e2ed1502e13affa75d9fec018fb6d.jpg

That’s a good looking stack there! Yeah, I was at my local tool shop yesterday and was shocked by the prices of Packout and ToughSystem. I’m real easy on my stuff as well

The Ridgid system is pretty dang good and relatively cheap.

Good for stacking, not so much for drawers and other options tho.

I have heard good things about the Milwaukee packout system, but dont own one, I do have the craftsman set up and it seems pretty cheap so I wont be buying another, takes up too much realestate on the garage floor!

You just missed the Ridgid system that was on sale for Father’s Day. Buy the big bottom and intermediate boxes and the Smaller top was free. Maybe the next time you see that deal is Black Friday.

I don't own any but have seen a lot of them on the jobsite. The thing I don't like about them is you have to remove upper ones to get to something in the lower ones.

They look great for bringing in a lot of different tools in a reasonably small and mobile package.

Have you considered getting a cart and using that if it would fit in the jeep

I’ve toyed with that, just like the idea of all contained in uniform boxes- also IP54 or IP65 is a plus

I owned the DeWalt system and hated them. The latching system is weak and a pain to use in my opinion. I agree for the price the rigid is tough to beat, however uses a similar latching system as DeWalt. In my opinion the Milwaukee Packout system is superior in many ways. Latching system is very strong, secure, and easy to use. It’s a complete system you can get boxes, bags, totes, crates, organizers, radio, etc. Again that’s just my opinion.

Have you looked at the Husky Connect at all? I have some of the cantilever organizer boxes that I keep fasteners in. They are solid and nice latches, but a fraction of the price of Milwaukee.

You can get a 3 pc Husky Connect rolling set for over 30% less than the Packout single bottom roller box on it's own.

I have the Dewalt Tough System (similar but not Tstak) and use it for storing all my hardware, spray equipment and some other things. I use the system to organize my shop and not as much for a mobile tool box solution.

I probably have 20 of the "small cases" these are awesome for hardware and come with smaller bins inside. These are used for all my hardware and make organization much easier for me in the shop.

I have a few 2-3 "extra large cases" that have my spray equipment. Then I have 6-7 of the "open tote cases" that I use for various portable power tool set ups. Things like routers, Festool Domino, multi tools, drills, etc. etc.

I believe that Dewalt has or is planning to revamp the line-up, my stuff is all the original design. HTH

The Packout system is nice, and a lot of offerings,

BUT it's expensive and very heavy for the amount of storage.
Something to consider if you are moving around a lot or over uneven terrain.
