I'm upgrading my old, scalding shower valve with a new temperature - balancing one.

I can buy either a Moen 2520 or 8370HD. They both seem to be exactly the same thing, so I don't understand the difference. The difference seems to be that 8370HD is "commercial" and costs 50% more, but I can't figure out what the actual difference is.

I stand corrected. Is the purpose of a ceramic cartridge so that you can solder it with the cartridge in place without melting the orings.

the ceramic cartridges that Moen use on some of their lines now, are longer lasting and don;t require changing them out as often.
also was thinking, does the more expensive one have the trim included & the other one trim is extra?

dunno about the commercial version vs non-commercial version, the look is that the plastic parts on the non-commercial version is replace with a brass, maybe other internal part as well are more heavier duty.

if you lived in an apartment complex, I know they recommended you to get the shower valves with "Integral stops" which is a shutoff accessible right behind the face plate of that plate build in.

Go to the item and click on support for spec's, the commercial valve has stops and a brass 1222HD cartridge, the other one has no stops and a 1222 plastic cartridge shipped loose in the box, so not the same valve body. On the old valves the stops were screwed on, now they are part of the valve casting. I don't believe Moen makes a 1222 type cartridge in ceramic, they're either plastic or brass. The 1222 Posi-temp cartridge was a less expensive way to do a pressure balanced valve body, the Moentrol pressure balanced valve had a cartridge and a separate spool that does the balancing. They now sell the M-pact and M-core lines, the M-core valves use a cartridge similar to a Delta or a Kohler shower valve which may be ceramic.

I am guessing the commercial one has a ceramic cartridge becasue the other one lists the cartridge # as 1222 which is Oring based and the commercial one doesn't list it by number
They both come with a cartridge.

From the 8370HD spec sheet .... CARTRIDGE •1222HD brass cartridge design •Brass construction stainless steel materials •Accommodates back to back installations
