Most shops now use refrigerated dryers. Especially when in humid climates. Desiccant won't last a day in high use, humid conditions. Nor will it fix a poorly designed piping system that doesn't have enough length, incorrect or completely missing water traps, lack of proper filters in front of the desiccant dryer etc. Many DIY guys are using undersized compressors to do stuff like using air sanders and paint guns which adds to the problem. The more a compressor runs, the hotter the air leaving it is, which in turn means greater condensate when it cools to ambient temps.
You need 50 ft minimum of 3/4" piping for a typical 2stage 5hp compressor. Then you need properly designed water traps and drain valves. In front of the desiccant dryer you need first a water coalescer filter, then an oil coalescer (in that order) then the desiccant dryer. Check it often and be prepared to switch it out often. Get desiccant that you can renew yourself(oven) otherwise be prepared to spend crazy money replacing the desiccant packets (Devilbiss DAD500 for example).
