has anyone tried to make a low cost molded template that will hold your air tools in drawer, along the lines of using low expansion spray foam, fiberglass..?

I have this half baked idea of making a wood frame same size as the drawer, put a piece of plastic under it, put tools in the desired arrangement, and inject the foam.

Similar to what shipping and packing comany uses.. you know the silver plastic wrapped foam that is more or less holding the object pretty good.

I've had similar thoughts, so if you do it, please post it along with pics.

that type of foam typically is rigid and somewhat fragile so with frequent use it will indent and break down
I think the best bet is to get a more durable foam and the cut out the hole for the tool.

I did see where someone did what you are talking about. they did this for precision measuring instruments. the laid the tools out, covered them with a satin type material and the did the foam. when the faom set, the trimmed the bottom flat and then put it in the drawer satin and all. for that application it worked well

I think the low expansion foam for windows and doors cures softer... I plan to wrap up the back with the plastic also..

it's easy and cheap to make another one it needs replacing.

i did have a similar idea at one time, to line the drawer with putty, press fit all the tools you would want to store, then remove the putty, and fibreglass it to make a mould, then fiberglass the mould to make the organizer, but i couldnt figure out how to adjust for the thickness of the fibreglass to make the tools fit after it was all said and done.

You gelcoat the putty and lay the fiberglass on it. Then THIS becomes your mold. You gelcoat and lay fiberglass on it and that becomes your tray.
