I found this old Monarch in a dusty corner of a second hand store today. It appears to be a 4 or 5 inch jaw. One jaw has been welded on and the old girl shows her age. I really like the looks of the old Monarchs. They were asking 35 bucks for it and I was not interested at that price. Still cool to run across an old vise like this. The stories it could probably tell....

I think I would still buy it at that price! I have never seen a Monarch in person.

Anyone know a general time period when this vise may have been manufactured? Model number appears to read 401?

Any other opinions on whether it's worth acquiring?

I remember back in the day learning from my shop teachers a thing or two, (even though that thought all us boys were not hearing them); that a good weld and and good glue joint held better then anything in this world...

With that being said if that vise was welded properly it will never give you any lost sleep so at $35.00 dollars buy it and use it; worse thing that happens is it breaks then you are only out a small amount of money (gas costs more for your car)!
