What happens when you try to register it for on road use? I assume it's going to be a Miata, but maybe it's an old Ford depending on where the VIN plate is. Register as an antique Ford? What's the drill here?

Depends on the state. Depends on the year of vehicle.
In Virginia anything over 25 years old you can get antique tags for it. No inspections. You sign a letter stating the car is safe for public roads.
In North Carolina it is 30 years and it is an antique. No inspections.
In most any state it is best if the vehicle can be registered as an older vehicle.

I've been watching that video series as well. As mentioned it will depend on the laws in your state. Many don't have inspections so it would be a lot easier to register the vehicle, depending on whether you used the Miata or the Ford VIN and had valid titles.

Many (most) states have provisions for titling and registering a homebuilt vehicle. Check your state's DMV website.

the car looks as if it is being built in the UK . if they go by the rules it will be registered as a mazda . we have a points system for major components so engine transmission steering brakes suspension and chassis or body shell are all mazda . so it is registered as a mazda . if they use the id from the ford they will not have to pay road tax or have an annual inspection (mot test) .

He is in the UK, and has said it will be a track car so it's not clear if he plans on registering it for street use or not.

In AZ you could make the case for Ford and Miata. A lot of Californians bring their offroad toys here to register them as AZ will sign off on damn near anything if you have a title.

I don't think his other track car is registered for road use and I doubt this one would be either.
If it were me and I was registering in my state (Missouri) I would go for the Ford VIN as it is older than 25 years and thus eligible for historic. Here like many places, historic registration nets you a one time registration fee and no inspections or other hassles.
