Monkey or pipe wrench

I’m not sure if I am posting this in the correct place as I am fairly new here. Retired wrench of 40 years, been collecting for a few years now. I am always looking for old and unusual monkey or pipe wrenches (which is it? Or are they all Stillson wrenches?) I picked this one up at a pawn shop and cleaned it up best as I could. The markings are pretty rough but it might be “JAN D 1872” on one side. On the other side maybe “P & T JAW ??873”. The handles are metal. Anyone recognize the maker?

Pipe wrenches have teeth in the jaws. Monkey wrenches have smooth jaws for nuts & bolts.

All I am able to make out from one of the images appears to be something along the line of "PAT XXXXXX 73" (or is that 72?)
I can't make heads of tails out of the other side.

As crguy says, generally speaking "monkey" wrenches are used for nuts (using smooth jaws) and "pipe" wrenches generally are those having aggressive teeth on the jaws for holding round pipes. (Although there are all kinds of "pipe wrenches" made with smooth jaws.)

You might have better luck by zooming in a bit, and moving your light source around to create harsh shadows, which may let you discern letters better.

I will often have better luck with my eyes and a magnifying glass, rather than a fixed camera image.
