Montezuma vs Extreme Tool Box

I'm thinking about getting a 56 inch top and bottom to replace the over 30 year old Craftsman 26 inch set I have - I'm out of room and my longer tools don't fit in it either, and looking at these two boxes. What's the difference between Montezuma and Extreme tool boxes? I've looked at both at online stores and they look almost identical with a few minor differences other than the Extreme being a few hundred dollars more for the set. I see the top box on the Extreme has 18 gauge drawer material and the casters are different as well as drawer layout on the top box but not much else. Thought about getting a 72 inch but it's just too long for the location I want to put it.

Also, I see the drawer dimensions on the boxes but would like to know the inside depth that will allow opening the smaller drawers without interference from the drawer above it.

Thanks, Steve

Thanks guys, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Just thought I would ask here first in case someone had information to contemplate over the weekend. Can you tell I'm a little anxious?:bounce:

Masterforce 56 inch box at Menards. I bought one, owned it for over a year and I love it!

I looked at those - they are very nice boxes at a great price, in fact they are on sale this week - they just don't have enough drawers for me to get organized well.

Montezuma in 72" if really excellent quality. The drawers use detentsfor final closure and these are available in a few durometers. For the price,I'm not aware of another option. Can't speak about the smaller sizes but read the reviews on the site and here also. Good luck.

I'd love to have a 72 inch one, but I'd have to relocate my Central Vac there's a canoe hanging from the celing in the way keeping me from raising it. I've thought long and hard and measured quite a bit and it's just more work than I want to take on to make room for it. They are an awesome set up for sure!

So did you get it? where's the pics? After looking online for a good 4 weeks I've made my mind up and I'm going with the same setup, in black.

I've decided on the extreme 56 inch, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Been busy expoxy coating my garage floor first then a couple weeks of vacation in Mexico and now I have to replace the Wife's car before getting a new box. Hopefully I'll get to it before the end of July. I was real close to getting a Mountain tool box, but they disontinued the model I wanted and replaced it with something that has less drawers instead has a big cabinet space built in which doesn't work for my needs. Shame, it was a great design and an excellent price too.

New tool box shows up Thursday afternoon - Extreme EX5621 combo in black. I'll have to get some help to put on the wheels I guess unless I can figure out how to sling it with some tow straps and use my cherry picker to lift it.

My similar sized International came on a wood pallet. I just slid it off the pallet just far enough to put the first set of casters on, slid more for the middle set. The end was high enough above the pallet to do the last set to just roll it off.
Didn't get mine with the upper box though. Cherry picker or some friends can do the job for sure.

Where did you order the box from?
Tool-Xpress .com - after some research they were the best price - Very nice people to work with - tell Jack that Steve in Iowa sent you if you decide to give them a call or check into ordering with them. Not getting any kick back, just a friendly gesture for a good place to work with and a worthwhile savings for people on the board thinking about ordering one of these.

I hadn't thought about that - I'll see if that will work - good idea!

Touching on the OP's original question in the thread....Steve, did you ever find out what the differences in the Extreme vs Montezuma boxes were? I noticed the same price difference too for what --at least on the surface-- appeared to be minor issues.

You went with the Extreme in the end, so it must have had some features on it you liked. Just wondering what you learned about the differences between them, if you wanted to share. Thanks!

That wouldn't stop me from buying one though. They are built like a tank.

My take on the differences is its mostly cosmetic - but when I 'm paying this much for a box and expect it to last the next 30 years for me that mattered.

No spot welds on the drawer fronts, Extreme's welds are on the side and there are gussets on the inside.

The drawer fronts are straight down on the Extreme - a little bevel out at the bottom from what I can tell from pictures on the Montezuma.

The gauge of the drawer fronts on the top box is heavier on the Extreme than the Montezuma.

The drawer pulls are solid aluminum on the Extreme vs an extension of the drawer front wrapped in aluminum on the Montezuma

A little higher gloss black on the Extreme.

From my research and talking with vendors - Both boxes are built in China - probably at the same plant and just built for different companies in the US.

Also found out the RXE Extreme is the same box as the Menards box - just a different color - black or blue vs green for the Menards boxes. it's not the box I got - but I did consider it - it's a good bit less expensive but a little less bling and lighter gauge metal in the drawers and sides and less drawers on top in exchange for the pull out work surface.

They are both great boxes I am sure - just spent another $160 to get the Extreme vs the same size combo from Montezuma for the cosmetic differences.

I got the box today, and pushing it off the pallet a little to mount the wheels worked great! No need to flip it on it's back. I did end up having a friend help me put the top box on instead of using the Cherry picker - let me just say though - Don't try this by hand without a few guys to help if your back isn't in good shape, its very heavy and a long lift. I used the plastic packing to cover the lower box sides at the top before we set it on there to make sure we didn't scratch anything up - then just lifted one end up and pulled that side's plastic out, then the same on the other side.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow - spent an hour or so moving some tools over from my old box to the new one tonight - i'm going to have to get some wrench holders to get it organized - my other ones are in the old box and adhesive back stuck to the drawer bottoms. Going to try to get some that are magnetic that will hold through the drawer liners.

Overall, very happy with the box and the service from Tool-Xpress - it's a nice piece and a good price.

Your not kidding. The Extreme with the 16 gauge shell ought to resist a direct hit.

I'm a little confused by some of the "specifications" on all the tool boxes.. I don't know if it is simply "rounding" errors - - of if they are measured with the powdercoating in place.

The Extreme 56" box lists the "Shell" as "1.2mm steel, powder-coating"

The list of Steel Gauge thicknesses - that I found/use says that 18 gauge steel sheetmetal is 1.21412mm thick.

16 gauge would be 1.5189

Drawer loads are listed at 100 lbs per set of drawer slides.

FWIW,
Carl B.

Not sure where the 16 gauge came from? The drawer fronts are 18 gauge on the Extreme and 20 on the Montezuma - the shells are both 20 gauge on the top box, 18 gauge on the bottom for Extreme. The additional thickness of the drawers and probably some design make the total weight of the Extreme 21 lbs heavier for the combination set vs the Montezuma. That said, the weight of the metal isn't the only thing to consider - fabrication and where folds / bends are made as well as gusseting and reinforcement is placed behind the panels. A sheet of 18 gauge metal by itself is pretty flexible - but when reinforced / folded / bent in the right locations it can make a very solid panel.

The differences between Extreme and Montezuma are for the most part cosmetic and won't effect function or usable life materially IMHO from my research. They are both very solid boxes that can last a life time if well cared for.

Congratulations on the new box. I have the Montezuma 72 and couldn't be more pleased. My take on Mo vs Ex was a wash. I don't think I would have been dissatisfied with either. I bought my from strictlytoolboxes.

The shell thickness is stated in the part description:

http://www.strictlytoolboxes.com/ho...nal-roller-cabinet-w-stainless-steel-top.html

This is the $2795 Extreme box.

Is it possible you were looking at the Extreme $1399 box?
the 16 gauge shell box is in the 55 inch box which is 30 inches deep version, not the 56 inch box which has a 20 gauge shell and $1995 from strictly tool boxes - the RXE is the $1399 version and has 22 gauge shell and drawers I believe. You can see the difference in weight between the models which for the 2 56 inch boxes is due to the gauge of metal primarily. The 55 inch model is also 30 inches deep so even with the same gauge metal would be heavier, but it does have heavier steel in it. Also the price of 2795 is just the bottom not the combo, the combo is closer to 4K.

Was wondering if you could post a follow up on how that extreme box is working out?
I just stumbled onto these while watching Craigslist for a used matco. Looking further into it extreme is located about 20 minutes from my house and I drive by their street each day not even knowing they were there. Going to call and see if they have anything assembled I can check out.

I am looking at the extreme 56" with a side box to replace my csps 41" Costco box I bought 5 years ago that I have outgrown. Hoping if it works out I can sell my box for a few hundred to offset it.

If the drawers roll like the big name boxes I will be sold. Construction has been validated on here as stout.

I have zero complaints on the box - it's just a great tool box, no issues with the drawers sliding smoothly at all. The fit and finish get's an A+. Very happy with it, I would go the same route if I had to do it all over again.

I just recieved (3) 56" montezuma base cabs, and (1) top chest. The drawer rolloers seem to get smoother, with the more wieght that is added to them. Very nice toolbox.
