Auction took place today in SoCal..........big stuff is cheap, little stuff is pricey.
Vertical mill went for $700, the Gerstner chest $225. Plus 18% auction fee plus 10% Cal state sales tax..
Tally up the raw material and man power to produce each item......staggering difference.
The amount of steel, motors, precision gears etc!
Versus a wood box.

I slipped out the back with this Charles Parker. Gonna cost me more in gas than what I paid for it lol.

Sounds typical.

I attended an auction years ago where mills like that one didn’t even bring an opening bid. Minimum was only $5
But mostly worn out, big vises brought hundreds of dollars.
Buyers had to remove equipment immediately and disassembly was prohibited.

Big stuff goes cheap, as most of us don't have the room for it at home, nor the desire to pay for riggers to get it moved.

Six-inch Craftsman lathes go for decent coin, and so do small mills and shapers. Big stuff will sit. I was at an estate sale this weekend and a three-phase horizontal mill got zero attention. Small drill presses? Flew out the door, as you can put them in your truck.

Dialed into an auction for a pharma manufacturer in Vacaville just before Xmas.
Picked up an Advance Tabco 24" x 96" Enclosed SS base table or cabinet. $325 +18%+sales tax.
and a Jamco 36" x 54" x 18" SS 2-door cabinet, $410+18%+sales tax.
The best one in Oct was a Novatek Voyager floor drill press, $25+18%+sales tax
$25 rigger fee on the drill press and Jamco cabinet.
One needs to be patient. And don't get caught up in over-bidding.
Cheers !

That Tree mill for $700 was a steal. I'd buy them all day long for that. The chest, wouldn't pay $225, wood I?
