Ok, so most of you saw (drooled over) exiged's "Cabinets!!" thread from a couple weeks ago about the great deal he got on the lab cabinets.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182671&highlight=Cabinets!!

Well, I've come into opportunity to get several of these cabinets out of a lab they are renovating where I work.

But I have a big problem: no garage. We're actually looking for a place right now, but we're not there yet. I know I'll be kicking myself if I pass up this chance so I'm trying to think of a way to make this work.

My thinking right now is to get a small storage unit and and store as many as I can fit. I figure I could sell a couple to pay for the storage (that will smooth things over with the wife). What do you think these are worth? Which configurations do you like best for the bottom ones (dim 24"Dx35"Wx36"H)? Here's the pics:

If I were you I would buy at least one section of the lower cabinets which would give you a nice work bench.

The wall cabinet that have glass doors I would buy all that you could afford. These look smaller than the thread you reference (not as tall) so I would not pay above $50. per cabinet. The wall cabinets with shelves would be only your personal preference. They don't offer much to me.

There was a guy on craigslist near me that had a bunch of them in various configurations (drawers/door) for ~$100 a section. I know they've been selling, as he started running out of certain configurations, but it took him a while, so perhaps that's a fair price, but you'd have to go lower for quick sale.

So, for the lower cabinets, I can get 8 narrow drawers, 4 wide drawers, 6 narrow drawers + one small cabinet door, or 2 door cabinet with one shelf. You can see one of each in the picture (the furthest one is 4 wide drawers).

Which do you think would be the most useful (valuable)? I think I'd like to keep one 8 drawer and one 4 drawer to put under a workbench. There are more where these came from, so I want to pick the right ones to resell.

I would buy them all, then after you get them set up in a shop, sell what you do not need.

Agreed. Bet them all. Industrial grade lab equipment is expensive so they will last a long time, and as Steevo said sell the rest.
Build the garage around the cabinets.

Buy a used/new enclosed car trailer, buy all the cabinets that will fit and park it in a secure storage lot. You (hopefully) will buy a house/shop soon and you will then only have to load/unload the cabinets once. You can then use the trailer to move all your household stuff. When you are done, sell/deliver spare cabinets to new buyers, sell the trailer and I'll bet you come out ahead on the deal. This is assuming you either own a tow vehicle or can rent/borrow one to do the towing. Those cabinets are highly desirable for the shop and should command a generous ROI!

You plan to build a garage or buy new home?

Look into the cost of renting a storage space. More importantly be confident that you will have a space to put it. If not, dont even think about it, move on. Just because its cheap, doesn't mean you should buy it and compete with the guys on here. Life is not a competition!

Buy them all then decide what you would like to keep. Sell the rest to friends at cost and have some beers.
