I think I might have found a decent used DP. Here is a link to the same one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004T9L0/?tag=atomicindus08-20 He is asking $300 for it, it's coming out of a cabinet shop. I would be using it for metal work. I REALLY wanted a table with t-slots, I could make it work.

This one popped back up on CL:

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/4165279860.html

Here is what I was considering if I bought new. http://www.lowes.com/pd_78742-46069...pl=1&currentURL=?Ntt=drill+presses&facetInfo=

Anybody here own any of these? Any insight on them? Keith

I've been on the hunt for a decent DP for many months, I just missed a VERY nice radial one. Keith

No experience with any, but a couple random thoughts. The Jet is less than half the weight of a Delta 17", too bad you can't find one of those, not that difficult to find up here (I currently have 3). The CL King could be a 20" drill, note the 3MT spindle, grubby, but if no other problems, might be decent $150-$200. The Lowes press is strange in that they don't list the swing, but rather the amps. Weird.

Swing is twice the distance from the center of the chuck to the column. In other words, what's the biggest circle you can drill a hole in the center of. It's the usual measurement used to describe a drill press. As the swing gets bigger, weight, features, power, etc. are usually increased.

The second drill press posted sure looks to me like one of the older offshore taiwan presses that were sold years ago.
(Just sayin,, some of them actually worked quite good, still is quite a few of them in use.)

I believe the 2nd guy is asking too much wampum for his DP.

It looks very similar to a model I bought back in the eighties for $220 new. It is a ¾ hp 12 speed model that was made in Taiwan. It has been pretty reliable except for the capacitor that went out on the motor and had to be replaced for $5.

I upgraded it with link belts and a keyless chuck. It is not a precision instrument but does a decent job overall in both woodworking and metal work.

I see what you did there. I'm on the same page, I was going to wave $100-$150 at him and see what happens. Hope the vise goes with it.

On the Porter Cable, pretty sure its about 8-9" from the qill to the column. Keith

Keith, the Pittsburgh and Youngstown craigslist websites are both pretty full of drills. I think there are better options than the one you listed. The slow speed pulley is an added bonus though!

Calling BS on that press for $320. Thats in a real shop, no way they let that go for less than scrap.

I'd love to find a 400 lb DP. Problem is nobody here is selling them. If they are for sale they are $1000, or they are worn out. Last decent one I looked at was a Rockwell with VS (reeves drive type) 3PH, not under power in an unlit storage unit, $450 http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/tls/4171584348.html

The $ 320.00 figure was the pre-restoration cost...it looked horrible...about like me...wrinkled, rusty, pieces missing, non-functional, etc...

That drill press is "somewhere" on this Forum, but, as I'm old, I can't remember where...

No BS...when it was purchased, it was scrap...after rebuild, not so much...

32" radial not slow enough i think

http://youngstown.craigslist.org/tls/4219941377.html
going to look at this one, the MT 1 taper sounds a little small

Here are the latest to pop up. I watch the 3 closest to me Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Northern Panhandle. Keith

The one with the supposed MT 1 spindle is a Delta 17", and I'll be shocked if it does in fact have MT 1, never saw one like that, pretty sure it wasn't even an option. Most are MT 2, although MT 3 and a JT33 stub spindles were options. Pretty sure I see a motor cap, so it is probably single phase. That is a top of the line press, heavy, probably 400+ lbs., has a table raiser, and is HD throughout. If no problems, it's worth $300. all day long, even better if you can get it cheaper. That radial above it is real light duty, no ridigity, almost a toy, wouldn't recommend it for metal work, or even serious wood work.

That makes a LOT more sense. I retract my call of BS.

I'm going to check out the one for $300 in East Liverpool. http://youngstown.craigslist.org/tls/4219941377.html Guy sounded pretty motovated to sell, and his ad is 29 days old. I'm hoping to grab it for $200-$250. As long as the speeds go below 300 RPM and the spindle doesn't have a ton of run out, I'm bringing it home. Keith

I went and took a look at this guy. It was filthy, the table has a bit of damage, one of the webs are broken. The belt is shot. It does have the low speed pulleys. The motor is very smooth and quiet. The table goes up and down with very little effort. He is not willing to budge on the price, but he did throw in a milling machine vise.

All that being said, I'm picking it up on Tuesday. Talked to the owner a bit, pretty decent guy. He has piles of drops he was very willing to let me rummage thru for stock.

I was REALLY wanting a t-slot table. This does not have one. I'm hoping to find a piece of about 1" thick t-slot material. I have found lots of it on e-Bay most is AL but a few decent steel ones for prices that don't make my eyes bulge to bad. I did find a replacement table http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROCKWELL-DE...342?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46132c26ce It's only about 30 mins away from me. At $35 it's hard to go wrong. Keith

Good for you. Was it MT2? Pretty sure that is a real early example, with the cool cast iron belt guard. Cleaned up, it will serve you well, and probably outlast you. Post some pics of the table when you get it, but if there is a nicer one local for cheap, probably even better. Usually use an AX52 belt.
Good luck, Jim

Yea it is an MT1. I guess I can get an MT1 to JT33 stub and put a good chuck on it. The belt guard feels pretty light I'm thinking cast alloy aluminum. Kinda looking forward to a good scrubbing and a paint job. I love Art Deco stuff and this DP certainly fits that bill. Will look good next to my Cincinnati Toolmaster. Keith

Watch garage sales also for #1M/T stuff , still lots of it around, and it is still sold new.
Last year i found a whole set of M/T drill bits in #1 M/T, all Butterfield, for $10.00.

Wow, that's strange, no mention of an MT1 spindle being available, only MT2 or direct 1/2" chuck. Catalog here http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=5382 I do remember an adapter that replaced the chuck on the non MT spindle, I wonder if that's what you have? If it is, easy to remove the adapter and add a chuck. Shouldn't be too hard to find an MT2 spindle cartridge if you want to go that route. Spindle cartridges are easy to change. Looking forward to some better pics once you pick it up.

I went looking for an MT-2 set up, and found this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELTA-ROCKW...567?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46184b193f

It looks to be exactly what is in the DP now. I might be wrong about it being MT-1. It is smaller than what is in the tailstock of my lathe. That however is MT3. I will take a MT-2 with me when I pick it up. I'm almost 100% sure I was wrong about the taper. Pretty sure it is indeed MT-2. I'll still want to get the table unless I can find a T-slot I can bolt or some how mount to it. Keith
