Been wanting to convert or add a hyd power unit to my press to get more ram speed when using my press brake. After searching ebay for months, a suitable unit was listed. With a 3 phase motor it was not that desirable to most and the price was decent. The seller could not offer any other information regarding pressure, flow and tank size. I knew I could find some other use for it if it was not the right fit/type.

Anyway, got it all integrated today and it does the job. However, it is rated for 1800 psi and can only deliver 11 tons of force. But is does provide for much faster ram travel and it will do well for most press brake work. For the heavy stuff, I will just use the air/hyd or manual pump, which are all still connected as they were from the OEM.

Oh yeah, I added some task lighting to the press as well. Used a magnetic base and a couple of flex flood light extensions from Lowes. Used LED bulbs to avoid being branded by hot bulbs.

Was a fun project and yielded good results.
Just wanted to share.

A very nice install. I especially like that it leaves you with all your options for running the press brake. What fuse rating are you using in the junction box??

Those are 1/2 Amp delay fuses to protect the motor contactor and pressure release solenoid. I have 15 Amp fuses at the disconect.

I just have to pay attention to make sure the ram is fully retracted before I switch systems. Otherwise, it will transfer fluid and over fill one or the other. Wish they had sight gauges...

Can you clarify a few things? Unit says 50 ton, so why the low psi and only 11ton output? What else has been changed?

This unit looks very similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000O576Z8/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Doc, the press works fine to its rated 50 Tons using the original air/hyd power. I wanted a little faster ram travel speed that is more common with electric hyd power units. I simply integrated a small elictric hyd power unit that gives me the speed, but it is only rated for 1800 psi. With the electric pump supplying the ram it only produces 11 Tons of force. I can switch to the air/hyd or hand pump and the press will produce the rated 50Tons, just slower ram speed.
How on that?

I like the safety shield. Never seen one on a press before, but its a great idea.

I got motivated from reading where a guy died after a bearing shattered and cut an artery in his neck.

If you look close you can see I have a 1/4" thick acrilyc section near the top too.

What is the speed of the ram under electric power? 2 in/second? Thanks

PT Doc, my mod has increased my ram travel from 3 min 15 sec to full 10" throw to 26 seconds. That would make the ram speed 1" per 2.6 seconds.

I'm pleased with that improvement...

Nice clean install HAP - great job - I need a guard now too. These things scare the heck out of me.

Thanks Glenn. I guess anything is better than nothing as a shield. Even a few heavy towels layered together would offer protection...
