Here is how I improved the lightning on my old garage door opener. Notice the use of CFL leftovers from upgrades to LEDs throughout the house.

There is never enough light, right?

Neat idea. It looks like you added a new fixture to the side of the Opener unit, too.

Did you Pass the additional wiring thru the housing?

The opener had originally two cheap plastic lamp holders on the side. The problem was that it was not designed for CFLs. The thick body of CFLs did not allow to be screwed in deep enough to have an electrical contact inside the lamp holders. I solved this by adding a bit of solder to the CFL's electrical contact. Not ideal though.

I replaced one of the two original plastic lamp holders and added a third one to the front. The other original one on the side would take more work to replace because there is a circuit board behind it from inside.

Yes, I passed the wiring through the housing.

Now I can use it with any kind of bulb, multiple bulbs, no matter the shape or size.

In addition to the increased output from the multiple CFL lamps, you have gained reliability from the redundancy of the multiple lamps.

Old garage - I got one of those cheap lamp to socket conversion screw in thingys, plugged in a pair of fluorescent T8 fixtures from Harm Despot I hung from the rafters. Problem solved.

I did this at my dads house 15 years ago, and he LOVES it! He uses the fixtures with the instant on ballasts and bulbs that light up even when it gets below zero.

He has brighter light when he enters and exits the garage, and we were able to install the light fixtures exactly where he wanted them instead of the light being just above the car on the opener body.

I put Cree 100w LED's in my garage opener, really lights things up, HD has them!
