Just got done unloading 3 more boxes that I inherited….only date code I could find was the Mac is marked January ‘75. Anyone got any ideas as to the age of the others?

I’m guessing the Cornwell is newer based on the larger size, but I could be way off.

That's a cool group of vintage boxes.

The Mac side box is late '70s to mid '80s. The drawer handles help to identify the era.
  • Early Mac boxes had formed steel drawer handles.
  • Mac then changed to die cast handles. I think this occurred in the early '70s, but I cannot be positive. These handles have the name "MAC" above "TOOLS" with a recessed oval background that is painted black. This fits the 1975 date code on the Mac bottom box.
  • Around 1977-1979 Mac changed the logo on the handles. These handles have the name "MAC" beside "TOOLS" with a recessed rectangular background that is painted black.
  • In the mid '80s they changed to a single extruded aluminum handle that is almost the full length of the drawer.
I'm thinking that the Cornwell boxes are mid '70s to early '80s. The old school drawer handles and the light duty casters and the 34" width suggest this era.

I can't help with the Snappy and MBC boxes.

Thanks for the help. I figure the majority of this stuff is pre-1990-ish. The newest receipt I found in all of it was for a Mac X34 extension in July of ‘89.

There’s another Snappy I haven’t even started cleaning out yet that is full of 40’s/50’s flathead goodies, so it definitely spans a few decades worth of stuff.

I say late 1960's to late 1970's. I'm not sure when Metal Box Company was absorbed/closed. The Cornwell Box looks like a waterloo made box. Waterloo was making boxes for Proto and others back in the day. Pretty nice collection of old school boxes.

Thanks all for the help….I never thought I would see the day in which I would find myself overwhelmed with high end tools. I’ve barely made a dent in 2 out of 4 storage buildings, and from what I’ve seen so far I think this old guy had bought doubles or triples of virtually everything.

I have the same Cornwell box. I don’t have a good date on it, but the serial number is 42001. Could you share your serial number?

I think you're right on the MBC boxes, probably mid to late '60s/early '70s.
