I think Sears will close some 400 more stores in the next few years. Their stores are old, outdated, merchandise *****, and there are better deals to be had elsewhere.
I do like Craftsman tools a lot. Fine quality, look good, feel good. However, Made-in-USA is their main selling point, which they seem to be losing rather actively. I wonder whether there are any new tools actually made here - I have a feeling what we see is just old stock...

I agree 100%. Made-in-USA is their main selling point. If they lose that I will have ZERO reason to go into a Sears.

I hope mine does. They deserve everything they get, they brought it upon themselves.
Funny, we need a new vacuum and generally I'd lean toward a Kenmore but I told the wife chances are Sears won't be around in a few years, so better to look elsewhere.

The real estate was worth $250m - I'm not saying thats how much they sold there per year. If the location makes that store worth $250 million bucks, I'm wondering how much merchandise it turns over every year.

The store in Hawaii that was sold does/did about a billion in sales anually.
My wifes manages a smaller "B" catagory store that does around $15 million in sales. It's EBITA contribution is a little over a million per year.
Problem with alot of Sears stores they are located in shopping malls that are 30-40 years of age. These were nice properties when built but as population shifts over the years have occured, they are not located in the nicer sections of town these days.
The sears store that does the most in sales is located in Puerto Rico---couple billion in sales. That store is huge...couple city blocks
If Sears wanted save a few bucks a year, they could stop printing off 4-5 feet of coupons in every transaction. My god, what a waste of paper.

I have used a few of the "$15 off your next $50 Tool purchase" coupons. This is an excellent one. Fact, I have one right now that expires 4/22/2012. I will wait to see what the next Craftsman Club sale has in it 13-19 April 2012.
All the others Sears department ones in the last 4 years never!

A bunch of Sears stores in Calgary are closing. They are in the same sad state as the ones being described in the States...except the prices are almost DOUBLE!

Same here precisely. Once or if they lose that part of Craftsman, there goes even the slightest interest going to Sears anymore. When that does finally happen (which I know will happen one day) Sears will become essentially Harbor Freight, just more expensive.
I doubt the lifetime warranty will stay though, nor will replacements either. I have a feeling in the not so distant future, people will be told they would have better luck repairing the broken items than actually dealing with Sears due to red tape then.
The Sears in my location does occasionally carry old stock, but you really have to look in the pack of the rack to find these products. The Craftsman products in the front of the shelves these days are almost always not made in USA anymore, so that is why I've done that.
But even some of Made in USA products aren't even that great anymore. Such as their chisels, usually the metal working ones. You can buy a Dasco Pro metal working for a fraction of the price and all Dasco products are made in USA as well. Easier to sharpen as well.

I've gone thru one of those close out sales recently and found some good hardware, electrical switches and relays pretty cheap. It's worth a look.

I have always seen lots of brand new craftsman hand tools w/packaging in our local flea markets. But lately the quantity of sellers has picked up noticeably. Makes sense after reading this thread. These sellers are competing side by side with the cheaper china tools and even at flea market prices, craftsman is loosing. Folks seem to just walk right by these tables. The real good tools are found one at a time buried at the bottom a box of broken barbie dolls and two left shoes. Good hunting everyone.
