These started as two Yugo underfolder M70AB2 virgin kits (never assembled, brand new).

Luckily, a guy I work with did the research and most of the work on the assembly of the working parts, as a virgin kit is MUCH more difficult than a de-milled kit. Here's what they started out as:

This one is the basic kit, with a teak pistol grip from Ironwood designs. The handguards took 5 coats of 2 different stains to match up, but it was worth it.

The next one was the same kit, but...I sourced a fixed stock rear trunnion that somebody was machining. I took the trunnion to a local machinist and had him machine the holes to install the button that hold the recoil spring for easy removal of the dust cover. Normally, fixed stock ak's don't have it, but...the parts were there since it was an underfolder kit, and I wanted it. :bounce:

I got a stock and pistol grip from Ironwood designs, a most excellent example of woodwork. I stained the front handguards to match the ironwood pieces, then used a stain/varnish combo to get the red.

I had a hard time finding a bolt long enough for the stock. I ended up using a Dorman leaf spring center pin bolt that somebody suggested to me. Worked great. Poor guy at the parts store..."what in the world do you need a 12" long 5/16-24 thread spring bolt for?" "ak-47" :wtf: :spit:

I still have to build a rear sling mount, as it's normally part of the undefolder and I did away with that, but other than that, it's finished.

With luck, they'll be getting sighted in this weekend.

This is the next project, a Mosin-Nagant M91-30.

the only thing I've done to it so far is to clean it up. The rifling and bore is excellent. I'm waiting on a recoil pad for it (no more metal plate), and I'll see how accurate it is this weekend. If it's accurate, there's a good chance it'll get an old style scope setup, a reworked trigger, and turned into a long-range gun.

I know, the pictures ****, this was my sister's camera, and I have no manual for it.

I love those M70AB2 underfolders, and the wood on yours looks great. My brother has one of those Mosins, I've played around with it and was able to do pretty well with the irons at 100 yards, they are inherently accurate guns, it's just a pain in the rear to clean them every time after you shoot em.

A very nice ********* of commie guns. Don't be too upset if that Mosin is not very accurate, they were never meant to be tack drivers. I have to post some pics of the two milled AK's I'm working on.

One's a milled Norinco and the other is a milled Bulgarian SLR-100 with a Polish parts kit. Ironwood had a walnut furniture set for the slanted rear of the Norinco, I'm fitting the furniture to the receiver now. Yeah, it's only an AK but I couldn't bring myself to put that nice walnut on when it didn't fit perfectly.

I'm thinking about using a combination of rust bluing and nitre bluing on the metal and I'll probably go with a Tung Oil finish on the walnut.

I have shot and owned a bunch of Nagants, the best group I have shot or have seen someone shoot is 3"-4" at a hundred years. I'm sure there are guns that have shot a lot better but they are an exception and not the norm. This is with factory surplus ammo, with the proper handloads the group shrinks. I believe the wartime standard for them was that they only had to shoot a 3.5" group at 100 yards from a mechanical rest. Hopefully you got one of the ones that shoot well.

I missed this, mine is an ex-sniper, so it *should* be more accurate. We'll see, one of these days.

I just got done putting my ar-15 together:

DPMS lower
CMMG parts kit
ASA side charging upper
hogue grips
1913 gas block
24" 1:8 Wilson stainless extra heavy barrel

Stock still needs to get filled with lead weight (WAY front heavy), versapod attached, and decide on scope or sights.

Great looking AR, I'm just stating to venture in to the AR world and after wrapping my head around direct impingement vs gas piston and all of the uppe/lower choices etc I'm just now starting to figure out what I want.
