.....today, did a little experiment with oxidized/faded sign weathering techniques. You'll need to get the big view to see what I'm talking about here, probably. Here, you see old lettering that has oxidized and is starting to streak/stain the areas below each letter.
(Sign is brand new---all brush lettered today)

Nice work! It definitely has the weathered and worn look to it. I like the worn edges around the black portion. And the water staining is spot on. A suggestion if I may, white tends to yellow out with atmospheric conditions and just dirt accumulation over the years. To replicate maybe tint to get a creamy color.

Thanks guys-----I just counted them up and I now have 6 CNW signs around the shop like this in various degrees of 'weathering' and one of them in the 'SYSTEM' version, so I'm calling it quits with this one, unless I sell them all.

I'd really like to sell my New York New Haven and Hartford (big expensive one!) and have been advertising it on New York pages on CL and facebook, but so far, no luck. I'm too stubborn and have too much work into it to give it away though, so I'll keep waiting.

Faux Old School... neat!

Thanks----but there's nothing 'faux' about this! It's the real deal, hand-lettered the traditional sign painter's way. That's my job. The weathering is 'faux', but the lettering is as real as it gets.

Mark,

Beautiful stuff, I suggest you post some at the modeltrainforum.com. There are a few that model the New York New Haven lines and I'm sure would be interested. I wouldn't be surprised if you got some custom requests too. I know I will be as soon as I get my train room layout started.
