Morgan Chicago Vise Resto.

I just bought an old Morgan Chicago #30 vise. Unfortunately, I never thought of posting this as a thread untl I had already sand blasted, and grinded my vise.

I'm going to fill in the holes that were too deep to grind with some putty.

Put the putty on in my basement last night.

Some people think that putty doesn't hold up, but I would think it does. I mean after all it holds up well on cars right?

Also, as ZRX61 said there really isn't much after you sand it.

P.S. - the slide is usually left bare metal...but whatever floats your boat...

I know, I just painted it because I had put putty on it since it had really deep scratchs on it. I might grind it after I'm done but I want to see if it affects funcutions.

Thats ok, neither did anyone else, $244M for Tuesday, hope springs eternal...

That's over $100M cash out, AFTER taxes... I didn't get a single ******** number last night in 5 tries...

I thought I might be able to take it off, but I didn't pay too much attention. I'll check into that tommorrow. Thank you

I'm pretty sure the Morgan just has a set screw thats holds on the collar at the end of the screw. Pop that puppy off & you can wirewheel it to a fine polish

ZRX is hot and correct today!!
There is just a set screw on the retaining collar. Remove it and the handle just pulls out.
James: very nice photos and effort!! It's great to see a bit of experiment in your putty work. And....it makes me feel great to know that my cake icing is the same as putting on body putty.....at least it looks the same! Keep up the good effort and Morgan will spring to life again.

Well, I flipped the vise over and boom!, there's the screw! Lol two turns with the screwdriver and I popped the whole thing out.

I sanded it more, then primered it more. Here is my vise with some color:

I switched paint at the last minute from a bronze hamertone, to blue metallic. 3 coats of that, and then 2 coats of clear. Going to be REALLY SHINY!

Next, I'll have my dad make me some jaws. Then I think I might use the silver hammertone from the handle to outline the lettering. Any suggestions on how to do this?

when i did the resto on my chas parker, i had my wife do the lettering, she used a script brush, and it came out just fine, i think

here's a tip, at first i told her to paint just the top of the letter, she said it wouldn't look good, she said u have to paint the whole raised letter for it to really stand out and pop and it did

u can get the script brush at like a hobby lobby or michael's (arts and craft store)

My dad thought that I could maybe spray cardboard, and put it on top of the lettering. Think this is a good idea?
