Mortar mixer tool

I’ve been using my bosch bulldog extreme hammer-drill in drill mode to mix buckets of mortar. I know I’m not really supposed to use the bosch for that but how many rotary tools can I possibly own.

Anyway recently it’s been running hot and it’s giving off a slight burning smell. What did I mess up inside of it? I’m gonna need this hammer drill to Rip up more tile in the future.

Any recommendations on a proper mixer?

Thx

They make mortar mixers. Never used one so I can't say if its any better than a drill. Theres also triple gear reduction motors that are supposedly able to mix that kinda stuff with more ease...

Just ideas, no idea what the best answer is.

small stuff I just do it by hand and on a flat plastic tub for about $8 or $10 at HD, after burning two good drills I stop using the 5 gallon buckets and paddle. Big stuff I use the HF drum cement mixer, dry mix in it then wet mix in plastic tub.. cause I hate cleaning up.

HF have a paddle mixer that works well if you do enough contracting works to justify for it. If you don't like HF, you can always google "paddle mixer" and get a good brand of your liking.

Park a chair by a wheel barrow and use a trowel for small amounts or hoe for large batch.I've seen guys mix by hand just as fast as a mixer ! A plastic tub works like said above. If mixing mortar and sand and water ,mix it without water first then add water.

So the bosch motor is burning up? Is it toast? Or should I just not use it for mixing mortar anymore?

I only mix 25 pounds at a time.

I’ll have a look at the horrible freight mix 90 - 25% coupon ain’t terrible.

The Makita is too expensive to just be a mixer.

At work I've been using the same a Black & Decker heavy duty 1/2" spade/D handle drill for at least 35 years to mix up mud of all types. I't's never seen service or a new part, one speed, no reverse, and has seen a lot of mud. My brother uses a variable speed 1/2" Milwaukee right angle drill. Variable speed is a little easier because you can start slow, the B&D you have to cycle on and off in short bursts and sneak up on it to get it spinning. A mortar box or wheelbarrow and mud hoe works fine too. I've never used a rotary drum mixer, more bother than it's worth for small batches.

BTW...You can't own too many rotary tools IMO.:)

Garden hoe and a plastic tub, bucket is the hard way.
With the hoe it's effortless. Just pull it towards you.
My mason buddy always added a squirt of dishwashing liquid, it works as an emulsifier and makes the mortar creamy, stops the water from dropping out.
They sell a special emulsifier, it's just soap.

I use a Masterforce Power Mixer I use it for everything concrete, tile mortor, dry wall mud, etc. It also has a chuck that can be threaded in that I used to drill a 6 in hole saw thorough a 2x12 (on the ground not on a ladder or something crazy like that) it has a 2 speed gear box and variable speed.

So turns out the kid who is helping me tile :
1. Doesn’t clean off the mixer paddle so the paddle is a big blob of old mortar
2. Spins my bosch drill at max speed
3. Leaves the drill right by the wet saw - motor probably got water on it.

I mixed the mortar yesterday at lower speed and it worked fine.

Side note : I threw a bag of small rocks into a bucket of water and spun the drill at medium speed. Cleaned the paddle right off.

The short answer is yes, it's burning up. If you can smell the burning smell that means the insulation on the wiring inside the drill is getting too hot. The next step after too-hot is when the insulation melts and the magic smoke comes out of the drill. Once the magic smoke comes out the drill stops working.

And either fire that kid and do it yourself or spend some time eddicating him.
