Mortising a door striker plate on vinyl?

Has anyone mortised a striker plate on a vinyl/fiberglass door?

I have a dual shop door setup where the one door is stationary unless you undo the dead latches at the top and bottom

Anyways I put new Schlage lock and knob setups on and it seems like I need to mortise the striker plate into the door as it is tighy when I close it with it on. Shuts fine without it.
I'm assuming the stationary doors edge is vinyl.
Can you hit this with a chisel like a normal wood door?

this cheesy kit, actually has a cool little template to rout out for the plate depth. I wish I could find a heavy duty version. It might be worth it for your one time job thou. You screw the template guide into the screw holes, and it allows you use a mini router thing with any drill, you follow the guide and it routes out the outline and then you just chisel out a few small sections.

I think that would work well for the knob latch plate but not the striker

If the material you need to mortise is indeed vinyl, it will cut just fine with a sharp wood chisel. if you need to create a radiused corner to match the striker, use a suitable Forstner bit carefully.

Might be better with an oscillating tool to cut the vinyl.

You should be able to cut the vinyl with a chisel, and then use a Dremel to carefully route the pattern? Or even use a cutoff wheel in the Dremel, since you'll have it out, to cut the straight lines in the vinyl and a diamond bit to do the radius's.

Cheap and works really well. Much better finish than anything I can attempt with a chisel. You can work vinyl like that with basic woodworking bits.

Went to lowes and ended up getting a dremel router attachment for 17 bucks.
