I have found when comparing these builders you have to compare the product. 26 ga vise 29 ga steel in itself will be a big cost upgrade. Type of lumber KDAT vs wet wood. Fasteners. Not all fastners are suitable for attaching steel into wood.

Here in Texas, I had a very good experience with a local builder named steelgaragesandshops.com. they built my 30x40 in 8 days. price was a little less than 25000. Built in 2008 and I'm very happy.

In this area I went with Lester instead of Morton. Lester roof trusses are southern yellow pine. Not so with Morton. Morton rep. didn't keep his appointemt with me. Neighbors is Morton mine is better in finishing details. Mine is 7 years old now and the paint still shines.

Lester is a division of Buttler.

I like the Lester rep and he seems very knowledgeable and outgoing. The only thing that concerns me is that Lester only offers G60 steel where the others all offer G90. Now if the paint hold up well I don't know how much the extra zinc coating really matters to reduce corrosion. I'm trying to get all my quotes back this week so I can make a decision on a builder.

Morton builds a nice building. Hate to say it but they are worth the money you pay for them. If you just use it for storage I'd say go with the local contractor. Any more then that I'd go with the Morton if money wasn't a issue.

Glen

Agreed...if they see crazy like you say, they wouldn't have a mile long waiting list and tons of buildings in farms everywhere.

Kinda like SO...pricey but worth it.
Sure, a 15 dollar cman will work just like a 70 dollar f80, but I see an awful lot of f80s around.

Bfaroo- I see you're in Green Bay- I'm in Sturgeon Bay. I've built a pole building with Forest Construction out of Luxemburg and think they do an very high quality building, you may want to check them out if you haven't already. One thing I like about them is they use stud walls versus a pole every 8 feet. I have not studied lots of different builders up close, but mine seems to be very clean, neat, and precise.

My buddy got a 52x75(?)x16' ceilings built from a company in Indiana, that came to Ohio and his building was total price of something like $24,000 total. I can't remember the exact figures without going back and trying to find the thread and pics. It's a damn nice barn for the price and that included the concrete floor. All he's using it for is cold storage though as he has another barn that is heated that he does all his work in.

I found it. Its a 52x60x16

Quote:
I stopped over at a buddies yesterday to see his new Pole Barn. 52' x 60' with 16' ceilings. I wish I had gotten some pic of it. He had a company out of Indiana put it up. And no, I don't remember the name of the company. He's going to run electric out to it when the weather breaks but not finish it off as he is just going to use it for cold storage. It does have a concrete floor though.

The company that erected it charged him $4000 for the erection, I'll send him a text later today and get the particulars on the other items. It has one man door, and two, 16 x 12 rollup doors, one at each end. Total price was $27,000 to build it. And if I heard him right, he said that was before concrete. $27,000 didn't sound too bad until you take the $4000. That would be $23,000 for materials. Doesn't that seem sort of high for a barn that size?
Here is the builders info

Ft Recovery Lumber Company
Telephone 419-375-4166

Ask for Brian.

Barn Cost $27429.02
Concrete- 20 yds. @ 5" deep = $4700

Labor $2400

The last pic for some reason is distorted. I can insure you the wall is straight.

Have you looked at 64 Metals?

That's what I've got and very happy with it. It's smaller(30 X 40) with an additional back room, but it has perma columns and steel trusses. I had $22,000 in it and that included R-19 white vinyl faced insulation, 5 inch concrete with 8 inch around 2 post hoist area, a front porch, and a cupola. That did not include doors and windows, because we have a Simonton Window outlet nearby.

I'm looking at a 50 year old Morton as I type this. Same building as it was when built, only replaced the walk-in door this summer. Little fading, not much.

I think you need to get a 3rd estimate, I been in and around metal buildings all my life and never heard of a Morton building estimate coming back 70% higher on a Equal building to what some Contractor can build one for. Even the silly Ad finder prices with *'s at the bottom aren't 70% cheaper on a size to size basis here in Missery.

Since you already got Bids, In What areas did the Extra 70% come from? Specifics?

My cousin would never build a Morton Building again. His was not straight. He complained so much it was such bad quality that the Morton people took it down and put it up again. So you have to be very careful with them just as much as any other place!!

You just proved everyone's point about WHY you should choose Morton....because ultimately they will do whatever is necessary to please the customer. Not too many smaller contractors are financially able to absorb the cost of replacing a building the customer isn't happy with.

It Sounds like Morton took care of your cousin, IMO that speaks volumes for the company that they remedied the situation, Hopefully the Crew was dealt with.. My wife and FIL deal with contractors on a daily basis via there architect firm, since I've been with my wife I've learned of some of the horror stories that come from contractors/home owners. It's especially important to really evaluate estimates, especially when there are huge differences between the top and bottom estimates.

I went with Morton ultimately for their warranty. 50 years with no snow load limit or wind load limit is a big deal. And 25 years on the paint is crazy too. They were so easy to deal with. As Scott said above, "You get what you pay for".

Here's what they did for me. :)
